Newtown Public Schools
Weekly Update - September 3, 2024
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Newtown Families, Faculty and Staff,
Dear Families, Faculty and Staff,
After last week’s wonderful return to school, I hope you had an opportunity to enjoy the lovely long weekend. And for those of you who live in town, hopefully that included enjoying Newtown's amazing Labor Day Parade! Thank you to all of our community and staff members who contributed to the success of the event!
Our opening days last week were smooth. We did not experience any significant delays in our bus runs and the weather was extremely cooperative. The early dismissal times helped the staff at our elementary and intermediate schools ensure that all of our students were placed on the correct buses going home. As I walked through many of our classrooms, I was greeted with smiles (biggest ones from the littlest ones) and stories of summer vacation experiences. I observed teachers and staff guiding students in an age-appropriate manner through typical first day activities designed to set the stage for the expectations to come later. Schools are only schools when filled with the promise of students. We are happy to have you back!
We return for four full days of school this week and also begin our Open House opportunities across all schools. This is a great time to say hello to the adults with whom your child spends the bulk of their time during the day and to get an idea of what their days will look like. Parents and guardians typically have a chance to ask general questions but we ask that any concerns specific to your child are discussed privately with your child’s teacher(s). We hope to see you all there!
Warm regards,
Anne

Other primary responsibilities include setting educational policy, approving the annual school budget, hiring and evaluating the superintendent and overseeing curriculum and programmatic implementation. Board members serve as liaisons between the school district and the community and their contributions are essential to ensuring the future success of Newtown Public Schools.
Typically, the Board holds its regular meetings on the first and third Thursday of the month at 7pm in the Newtown Municipal Center Council Chamber. Board members also devote time to the Board’s subcommittees in order to increase the efficiency of their operations.

Join the PTA
More than just fundraising!
Did you know that joining your PTA offers several benefits for both you and our school community? Our PTAs do many wonderful things throughout the school year that support and enhance the educational experience for our students. In addition to raising funds for educational programs and classroom resources, members have the opportunity to have their voices and ideas heard, meet new people and build connections within the school and greater community, as well as gain leadership skills that can be both personally and professionally valuable. In addition, being involved in your PTA gives you a closer look at what is happening in your child’s school by participating in or organizing events that foster a positive school culture.
You can find a link to each school's PTA by clicking on this link.
Thank you for your support!
Beyond the Classroom
Tammy Thornton from Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority stopped by Sandy Hook Elementary School to speak with paraeducators about implementing a comprehensive recycling and composting pilot program. Be sure to ask your Sandy Hook student how they are recylcing for a better tomorrow!
