Message From Superintendent Mueller
Welcome Back, CUSD!
We are looking forward to welcoming our amazing students back to campus for the first day of school next Thursday, August 22nd. We have missed their enthusiasm and energy, and can’t wait to make connections and engage them in learning and friendship again. Education is never ending and we are so fortunate to have a team of educators and staff who model and inspire lifelong learning. It is going to be a great year in CUSD!
The first day of school is always hectic and exciting (not just for kids, but for parents and staff as well!). All details about what to do, where to be, and when to be there, are included in your principal’s site newsletter.
Our administrators have been working all month and our Maintenance & Operations crew has been working all summer to complete projects and ready everything for students on Thursday.
Speaking of summer projects. The entire first floor of Village Elementary School has been upgraded. The classrooms, bathrooms and common areas, including Village Hall, have all new flooring, lighting, paint, and landscaping. The front office has been completely remodeled and upgraded to include additional security enhancements. While last year’s flood was disastrous, we managed to turn it into an opportunity for a big upgrade funded by insurance coverage. Kudos to Gary Hall and our Maintenance & Operations crew for working all summer to complete the projects.
You may have heard that the district made some administrative changes over the summer. You can read more about those changes in two feature stories on the Newsroom page on the district website.
We are excited to welcome 19 new teachers to our district! Browse through the 2024 New Teacher introductions slideshow HERE
Also new this year is our Library Materials Opt-In Notification policy. The policy allows parents to receive notifications of the books and instructional materials their student checks out of our school libraries. Read more HERE.
We are looking forward to meeting families who are new to CUSD at the New Family Ice Cream Social at the District Office next Tuesday, August 20 at 3pm. We host this annual event with our Military School Liaison/ Naval Base Coronado partners. See flyer below for details.
Tuesday is also our All Staff Picnic on the grass behind the district office. We are excited to reconnect with staff and enjoy food, games, and a raffle with prizes donated by the Hotel del Coronado.
I look forward to seeing many of you on Thursday and Friday at the school sites. Our district office team will be at all of the schools to greet students and help answer questions, direct traffic, and experience the magic of new beginnings. We wouldn’t miss it!

Mobile Device Protection Plan for Families With CUSD Chromebooks
If your student has a CUSD issued Chromebook, you are encouraged to review and consider purchasing the OPTIONAL Mobile Device Protection Plan (MDPP) for the 2024-2025 school year. The annual plan is designed to cover accidental damage of CUSD Chromebooks including screen breakage. In addition, the plan will protect against spills, fire, flood, natural disasters, and theft/loss. Mobile hotspots, power cords, cables, and other accessories are not covered. Intentional damage, improper device storage, and misuse are not covered.
The cost of the plan is $30 per device per year. The plan must be purchased annually at the beginning of each school year or at the time of registration to be valid. To maintain coverage, a new plan must also be purchased if a student is provided with a replacement device due to damage/loss of their previous device. This money will be used to create a dedicated pool of funding to replace or repair covered technology. All money collected through the program will go into a special account that can only be used to replace or repair technology that is covered in the plan. We highly recommend this low-cost protection plan. To purchase a Mobile Device Protection Plan for your student, please use the instructions at the following link: Mobile Device Protection Plan Purchase Instructions.
If you do not purchase the Mobile Device Protection Plan for your student’s device, the following fees will apply should damage occur:
Damage Type and Replacement Cost Plus Tax
Chromebook - Full Replacement $400
Damaged Keyboard $80
Damaged Screen $80
Damaged Motherboard $160
Damaged LCD Bezel $40
Damaged Camera $40
Lost/Damaged Charger* $22
Lost Case* $19
*Accessories are not covered by the Mobile Device Protection Plan.
