Class of 2020 - Student and Family Update
April 30, 2020
Dear Class of 2020 Students and Families,
We are extremely proud of the Class of 2020 and all they have accomplished during their educational career in our school district. While the end to this school year has been like no other, we remain excited about the bright future of our Eagle graduates. We pride ourselves on our school culture built on a foundation that our beliefs drive specific behaviors that produce key outcomes. The Class of 2020 has been a remarkable example of this culture during the last two months of this emotionally challenging school year.
Our district and high school administrators and senior team members have worked to update alternative plans we began a month ago for New Albany High School’s graduation ceremony and senior activities given the shift in the Governor’s orders this week. The Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Health issued revised guidelines yesterday.
Based upon the revised guidelines, we will meet with Franklin County Public Health officials next week to seek input, guidance and agreement for an enhanced diploma experience. When approved, we will announce to our seniors and their families a detailed and comprehensive plan for a voluntary personalized drive-thru diploma conference and senior photo celebration for the Class of 2020 with their immediate family members following the virtual graduation on Saturday, May 23, 2020. To affirm, we have a draft plan to enhance the graduation experience for the Class of 2020 and are working with our local health department and law enforcement partners for agreement..
On May 23rd at 10:00 am, the New Albany High School Class of 2020 Virtual Graduation ceremony will begin. The virtual ceremony will be as traditional as possible but prerecorded. The virtual ceremony will include music, student speeches, graduate certification, a celebration of each graduate, and, of course, the turning of the tassels to demonstrate our #EaglePride. New Albany High School is working to produce a memorable ceremony with the support of a professional videographer that will allow students and families to view and cheer together as each of our 382 graduates officially commence virtually as the Class of 2020. Seniors, please remember to submit your graduation photo through the Google form for staff select by 3:00 p.m. on May 6th.
On behalf of the faculty, staff, and administration of the New Albany-Plain Local Schools, we want to let you know how much we miss our students. Graduation for the Class of 2020 has been impacted by an unprecedented and unimaginable event, COVID-19. We are determined to create positive outcomes for the Class of 2020 in cooperation with Franklin County Public Health. We thank you for your continued patience in allowing us to adjust, adapt, and step up now that the Governor, ODE, and ODH have shifted what may be permissible. We will update you following our meeting with Franklin County Public Health next week.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Kraemer, Principal
Shirley Hamilton, Director of Secondary Education
Michael Sawyers, Superintendent
