This week saw the culmination of significant planning and preparation on the part of our teaching and support staff as the Year Nine Activities Week and Year Ten Camp Week got underway.

Staff planned water activities, waka ama, mountain biking, roller skating, around-the-world activities with a simulation of a plane trip and much much more. Students enjoyed the inflatables, the experience of other countries cultures and foods and getting to know new staff and new students. Teachers celebrated the opportunity to share a side of themselves which is not always there in the classroom and to make connections with students whom they have not encountered before.

So to all whanau who showed the appreciation and respect for the staff’s mahi this week, by sending students to school for this special week in the school term - thank you. Your effort ensured your young adult’s learning continued and that they had the opportunity for enrichment and new understanding.

We were disappointed by the number of our students who did not attend this key week of the school term and will be contacting whanau via a survey to try to understand why students were not here. We want to offer learning and experiences which are relevant and purposeful for our students. We want to help them to develop as young adults - and we thought this week was part of that vision for our students. Clearly, it was not seen in this light by all families so it will be helpful to hear from whanau what we could have done differently and how we could have ensured that students were at school this week. On Tuesday we will finish the term with the Junior Prize-Giving and we look forward to celebrating the achievements of our junior students at this important ceremony. Whilst we cannot invite whanau to the event because of the restrictions imposed through Covid-19, we will do our best to find ways to share the event with you and ensure you see your young adult receive their award.

This will be the last formal newsletter for the year and, on behalf of all the staff and the Board, I wish you all a peaceful and rejuvenating summer with whanau and friends and a very happy Christmas. We look forward to reuniting with your young adults in the new year and continuing their learning journey at Trident.

Wow, what a week!! Tarawera for a walk, Whakatane heads for waka ama, Ōhope for fish and chips, wharf jumps and long lining, Redwoods for mountain biking, Opotiki on the dune trails and West End Ōhope for surf lessons. Creating memories of a lifetime with their friends and fantastic teachers, a great end to the year!

The crew smashed Onepu MTB park.(thanks Onepu, amazing track conditions!). Today they had fun at The Redwoods, doing dipper, challenge and roadside challenge a few times to get ready for the shuttle to the top and a full day mountain biking down tomorrow.

This MTB crew mean business!

The Year 9 activity week for our Junior students has been fantastic! A flight simulation with an around the world trip including Mexico, Japan, Hawaii and Hungary has seen students learn and make little creations. Creating beaded Christmas decorations tested patience, a geography lesson with a twist was fun, delicious pizza bread and brownie making filled hungry puku, while the four different inflatable slides and activities have been a hit on the field!

'Day of the Dead' mask making on a ‘trip’ to Mexico for our year 9 students proved to be a hit!

Around the world with our Year 9 students! Ms Lai and her team assembled the poster display the students had made during the week. A great asset to our library, well done Ms Lai and the Year 9 students who helped create this amazing piece of art work.

Thank you to Ivy Bates from 'Let’s Roll Coaching' who ran 'give it a go' sessions as part of our Year 9 Activity Week. Students from SEC and some of the Year 10 camps also took part. Lot's of fun was had and today we have at least one teacher hobbling around after an unexpectedly hard workout!

Here we have Year 9 students and their mahi on their 'trip' to Scandinavia and South Africa. This week is proving a hit with the diverse set of experiences our fabulous teachers are creating for our students.

Today some of our lucky Year 9 students spent time learning to paddle waka under the guidance of Mrs McCaull. From the boat ramp up to the bridge and back, the group learned to work as a team and get their rhythm in check over the course. What a great experience for our students!

Our new Food Technology suite has been in action for a year now and as you can see it is a great learning space. Each of the kitchens has plenty of bench space to make delicious creations and with the kitchens facing each other, students work alongside each other nicely.

This is the last class to go through the Food Technology rotation for the year and they are busy finishing up their practical work.

All long term loan chromebooks must be returned to the office ASAP.

Olympian Hayden Wilde Athlete has been crowned the World Champion at the XTERRA off-road triathlon event in Hawaii

Description

This course is designed to give high school students the knowledge and skills to babysit children of all ages. It's written for first time babysitters; you don’t need to have previous experience to enroll. It’s ideal for students aged 14 and above.

Time commitment

This course will take approximately two (2) to three (3) hours to complete spread across three weeks.

Working your way through the course

The nine modules are designed for you to work through in sequence. At the end of each module, it will tell you that you are ready to start the next module. To do this, you will exit out of the module you have completed and then open the next module in order.

Topics

You will learn about:

• the role of the babysitter, including the expectations of the families you are working for
• ages and stages of children from birth to school age, their basic needs and their care
• professional behaviour, including your presentation
• how to engage with children of different ages, including activities for each age group and behavioural information
• safety, including emergency situations, keeping yourself and the children safe, and basic first aid
• how to get a babysitting job.

This course is presented using videos, quizzes and activities which are fun as well as informative.

Course Completion

Upon completion of the course and the final quiz, you will receive a certificate certified by Whānau Āwhina Plunket to show employers that you have completed this course and are ready to babysit. As well as the certificate, we will send you a Babysitter’s Manual that supports all the information you have learned in the online course.
