Lunch Bunch for 1st, 3rd, and 4th Grades
It's time for Lunch Bunch at East Elementary! 1st, 3rd, and 4th grade parents are invited to join their child for lunch on Friday, October 4.
- 3rd Grade: 11:00-11:40
- 1st Grade: 11:45-12:25
- 4th Grade: 12:30-1:10
During this time, you are able to enjoy lunch with your child picnic style out on our large playground. You can bring lunch for you and your child, or your child can get lunch from the cafeteria. We do have a few picnic tables outside, but we encourage you to bring blankets and/or lawn chairs. You can arrive as early as five minutes before the event to get your area set up. As students begin to head outside, they will meet you. When you are finished eating, feel free to play with your child at recess.
Once the event is over, we ask that you allow your child to line up with their class and head in. Parents are asked to exit the playground using the gate at the southeast corner next to the building. We hope to see you all soon!
Just a reminder, kindergarten and 2nd grade will have their lunch bunch on Friday, April 11, 2025.

East Elementary PTO
Parents wanted fewer fundraisers and we listened. These TWO fundraisers will cover things like the gumballs your kiddos get with spirit tickets, teacher appreciation meals, play day shirts, and large playground equipment, etc. that PTO funds. That means we really need everyone to participate and do their best to make these TWO… that’s right ONLY TWO… school wide fundraisers a success. Find details about our auction on the flyer below.
While we’ve scaled back on fundraisers, our calendar of events for October is chocked full. Here are all the things you need know:
Parent Teacher Conference Meals: On October 17th and 22nd there is another opportunity to treat the educators of East. PTO will be providing the main meal on these evenings, but we will be asking parents to contribute desserts, sides, paper products etc. Our teachers and staff are fabulous, but an empty stomach can turn anyone into a monster. If you are interested in helping, please click this link to sign up.
Trunk or Treat: Back by popular demand is the 4th annual “let’s get these kids sugared-up” event. While the students will be thrilled with every Twix and Twizzler collected, last year’s parents reported the real treat was seeing little Pikachus, Pirates, Princesses, etc. solicit them for sweets. As much as the kids would love an endless supply of candy we only have 58 spots in the lot and will need everyone to sign-up in advance. If you already have a Monster Ball or meeting with a Frankensteinian client you can’t miss, don’t worry. We would love you to participate by donating candy. The sign up link for this event will be shared soon, so be on the lookout!
Some things are worth repeating. Just like these great events and telling you how much we appreciate parent and teacher participation. THANK YOU!!!
Mrs. Moyers’ Message
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. One of the first steps to preventing bullying behavior is to ensure that both students and adults understand what bullying is. Stopbullying.gov defines bullying as “...unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The behavior is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time.” (https://www.stopbullying.gov/what-is-bullying/index.html) A few years ago, the students and staff at East Elementary voted to adopt a definition that had the same components of that definition but that would be easier for our K-4 students to understand and remember. The East Elementary definition of bullying is “When someone is being hurtful or harmful to you, on purpose, over and over and over again, and you can’t get that person to stop.” In Counseling, students will be learning how to recognize, respond to, and report bullying behavior, and how important it is to stand up for someone who is the target of bullying, including themselves.
Bullying is a very serious issue and so it is important that we are all aware of what it is (and what it isn’t) and to use the term correctly. If you feel your student is involved in a bullying situation, do not hesitate to contact me (jmoyers@jr2mail.org). You can also fill out this anonymous online bullying form here or by going to the Jackson R2 District webpage or the East Elementary webpage and clicking on the icon that says “Stand Up, Speak Out”.
The last full week of October is Red Ribbon Week which is dedicated to helping students making healthy choices and especially saying "No!" to drugs. We will be taking that week in Counseling to learn about the many different ways we can work to make safe, healthy choices for our brains and bodies.

Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, October 17 and Tuesday, October 22 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Teachers will send invitation letters/emails home soon. Please specify the time and date that works best for you and return to school. Please come and support your child! Our goal is to have 100% participation.
Trunk or Treat October 31
We are excited for this fun event and hope you are able to participate (sign up link being sent soon)! Grade levels will take turns walking through the Trunk or Treat, so you want to plan to be at East from 12:30-2:40. Parents can begin decorating their trunks around 12:30, and we will start a grade level through at 1:00. Every 20 minutes, we will send a new group through. We have approximately 440 students, so please plan to give each student one piece of candy. This event is weather permitting. If it is raining, an email will be sent, and the event will be moved inside. All you will need is a lawn chair and your candy! If you have any questions about the event, please contact the office. We do ask that all students stay at school until being dismissed at the end of the day. Thank you for understanding.
Reading Success Plan
Our reading intervention groups are well underway. If your child has received a Reading Success Plan or if you are curious about the instructional resources utilized for intervention, you can review our Reading Success Plan instructional resources here. As always please reach out to one of our reading interventionists with any questions or concerns you may have.

Artsonia
I hope you have enjoyed getting to see your child's art on Artsonia, because I sure have enjoyed helping them make it!!! I post a photo of all of their finished artwork so you get to see it as soon as they make it. As a bonus you can buy items with their adorable masterpieces on them (coffee mugs, ornaments, coasters, greeting cards, etc.)! If you are looking forward to the holiday season, be sure to keep this program in mind for one of a kind personalized gifts! Our school gets 20% back from what you spend on the website and last year alone we raised over $1000! Thank you so much for your support and for sharing your little artist with me!

News from the Nurse
We appreciate everyone keeping their child home when sick!
- Please continue to screen your child before school, and keep your child home if they are sick. Remember, our policy is 24 hours free of vomiting, diarrhea, and fever (without fever-reducing medication in 24 hours). Other symptoms need to be improving in 24 hours before your child can return. Try not to give Motrin/Tylenol (when they are not feverish) because it can mask a fever (the medication takes the fever away so it is unknown whether your child had a fever). Jackson R2 considers a temperature of 100.1 or higher as a fever.
- Don’t forget to clean those water bottles daily (hot water and soap) to prevent strep infection! and continue to WASH YOUR HANDS (that is the BEST way to prevent infection)!!!
More important information:
- On Wednesday, October 2nd, the Cape County Health Department (CCHD) will be at East in the morning (only) to give Flu Vaccinations. They will only have shots (no nasal mists). Early Childhood students will need to have a parent/adult with them. Consent forms will NOT be sent home this year. Anyone who wants a flu shot, must register. Please see the attached CCHD letter and use the QR code. The cost is free for students (with or without insurance). *All flu vaccination registrations need to be completed by Sept. 30th for CCHD to review. Only students with a completed online permission form will get the vaccination.
- Here are the following links to the CCHD letter/forms:
- CCHD letter
- Vaccine information statement
- Dental Screenings for all K-4th graders will be on October 4th. Only those who return the permission form with a “yes for varnish” will get varnish. (Everyone will be screened.)
- LICE!!!!! We wanted to make sure everyone was aware that IF you would receive a notice, the dreaded lice letter, in your child's backpack to please check their head. Furthermore, it is also a good idea to periodically check your child for head lice (the earlier lice is discovered the easier it is to get rid of!). What if your child has it? Please alert the nurses, Tosha and Theresa, so we can help! We want to prevent the spread of lice, and we can only do that if we are aware that your child has it.
Thank you,
Nurse Tosha Borgfield and Nurse Theresa Stearns
