KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
Thank you to everyone who supported our Northwood PTA during their enrichment fund week, Piggy Palooza. They were able to raise over $12,000 throughout the week with a big additional push of donations on Friday. The winning grade was second grade so they will be ready for their popsicle party soon! It is solely because of support of our PTA that events like Family Fun Night last week and BINGO in the spring are able to happen as well as the continued support for field trip costs, staff mini grants and classroom wish lists, All Pro Dads, Fall Mornings, etc.
Not too far around the corner you will be seeing new publicity to support another Northwood organization, the Northwood Foundation. The Foundation has been in place for many years and works to raise funds for the school as well. The Foundation supports school initiatives to enhance our curriculum (Greg Tang Math) and staff collaboration and professional learning community practices. They recently used funds to install the marquee at our entrance and purchase a poster printer for the school. They also fund Artist Day, our book vending machine and enhance our physical grounds with exterior landscaping that the district does not cover. In prior years, the Foundation’s fundraiser, Boosterthon, took place in the spring. It has been moved to the fall this year with the fundraising window being October 24th through November 4th. The Fun Run Date is scheduled for Friday, November 1st. (Rain Date: Monday November 4th) The weeklong event will have a slightly different look and feel to veteran families as there will not be daily individual prizes given to students, but a shift more to classroom, grade level, and whole school challenges and goals. More information will come from the Northwood Foundation soon about the upcoming Booster events for October. There will not be an additional run in the spring this year.
We are so very fortunate to have both an active and involved PTA as well as an active and involved Foundation, not many elementary schools have the support of both. To help delineate their differences; in a broad sense, the PTA supports the staff, students, and families directly with designated and planned events and the Foundation supports the overall school infrastructure enhancements, staff growth, as well as student experiences.
Enjoy the weekend to the fullest! Sunday is officially the first day of fall!
With gratitude,
Heather Rucker
Principal
PIGGY PALOOZA SPARE CHANGE DRIVE & ENRICHMENT FUND RESULTS
The PTA would like to congratulate the 2nd grade as our winners of the Piggy Palooza spare change drive with a grand total of $2,167.03! They will be treated to a popsicle party next week.
Explorer community, this has been THE MOST SUCCESSFUL CHANGE DRIVE in Piggy Palooza history! YOU raised a grand total of $6,162.47! THANK YOU for providing financial support for the PTA.
Enrichment Week had an overall goal of $15,000 to be raised through memberships, online donations, business donations, and the spare change drive. This year, we came up just a bit shy of our goal and raised over $12,000. It isn't too late though to support the Enrichment Fund. You can still join the PTA on Membership Toolkit. You can purchase your membership, spirit wear, access online directory, sign up for volunteer opportunities, and view the PTA calendar.
KINDERGARTEN EXPLORERS
Kindergarten students are in the full swing of things and are enjoying learning every day. One of the students' favorite part of the day is when they get to practice the skills they have learned in small groups and centers.
FIRST GRADE EXPLORERS
First Grade has had so much fun in Social Studies and Science. We had a blast creating edible landforms to wrap up our learning of geography in Social Studies. In Science, we were excited to do an experiment where we got to see how the water cycle works and discuss different types of weather!
HANDBOOK HIGHLIGHTS: EARLY CHECKOUT PROCEDURES
The school day ends at 2:20 p.m. Please avoid early checkouts as instruction goes on until 2:15 p.m., however, if your child must be checked out early, please do so before 2:00 p.m. After 2:00 p.m., students will be sent using normal dismissal procedures so as not to interfere with the school-wide dismissal process. We appreciate your cooperation and consideration.
SEPTEMBER IS ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH
We want to highlight positive attendance outcomes:
- Students who attend school regularly feel more connected to our community and are engaged in their learning.
- School attendance improves reading proficiency!
- On-time, regular school attendance builds life-long work habits that promote success!
If you have outside circumstances impacting your child’s attendance and would like support, please reach out to our School Counselor, Jennifer Weeks at 470-254-6390.

THE MORE YOU KNOW: GENERAL AND MEAL ACCOUNTS
When it comes to loading money onto your child's account, whether through the My Payments Plus Website or in person, there is a difference between the two accounts. Money loaded onto the Meal Account can only be used for Meals, while money onto the General Account can be used for Meals, Snacks, Ice Cream, and Ala Carte Items. So, if you only want your child to be able to purchase meals and nothing else, keep all funds on the Meal Account. Otherwise, you can put money on both, or put it all on the General Account.
