Summer Teacher Externships Available!
Welcome to the NE MI Teacher Externship Program, an integral part of the MiSTEM Network's ongoing efforts to enhance STEM education across Michigan.
At the heart of our mission is the desire to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications by connecting teachers with careers, essential skills, community partners, and training providers. By immersing educators in paid externships within STEM fields, our aim is to provide them with firsthand experiences that will empower them to inspire the next generation of innovators.
During our summer camp experiences, educators will immerse themselves alongside students, adopting the perspective of a learner with educator insight. Engaging fully in all activities and skills, they'll also serve as vigilant overseers for student safety. Through these paid externship opportunities, teachers will glean firsthand understanding of the skills, hurdles, and potential paths in diverse STEM fields. Our aim is for educators to re-enter classrooms invigorated and equipped to infuse their teaching with newfound knowledge and enthusiasm, igniting inspiration in their students.
Externships also serve as a powerful form of professional development, enabling teachers to cultivate lasting partnerships with local businesses and community organizations. By engaging directly with industry-based practices, educators will be better equipped to integrate relevant and meaningful examples into their curriculum, enriching the learning experience for their students.
As part of the Teacher Externship Program, we strive to achieve several key objectives:
- Foster enduring partnerships between businesses, community partners, and local schools.
- Align the Teacher Extern experience with STEM content and Michigan's 21st-century skills.
- Provide students with authentic insights into potential careers available in Northeast Michigan.
- Empower teachers with real-world applications to enhance classroom instruction.
Explore over 36 externship opportunities throughout the summer spanning various lengths of time, locations and topics. Topics range from underwater robotics and water resources careers to robotics, exploring electricity, welding, CNC machining, and more. Delve into the Building & Construction Trades Union Academy, Health Careers, Forest School, Computer Graphics & Design, Public Safety careers, Automotive industry, drones, and bridge building. These opportunities are available in communities such as Onaway, Cheboygan, Gaylord, Grayling, Roscommon, and West Branch.
Participating teachers in the Teacher Externship program will receive a stipend of $150 per day. Additionally, SCECHs will be available for participants. It is essential to note that active engagement in reflection and feedback on the externship experience is a requirement for all participants.
Registration opens April 22, 2024

The 2024 event will be on May 16 at the Ellison Place in Gaylord
This year we will be offering 2 sessions, allowing students additional time in each quadrant compared to prior years. We are inviting 8th-12th grades and have over 1200 students registered so far.
If you, or a company you know of, would like to be an exhibitor at the event, please complete this Exhibitor Registration Form. If you aren't sure what kind of exhibit to offer, please reach out to me for some ideas (I've attended quite a few MCQ events across the state so I may have some ideas) https://forms.gle/kBvkQTFVR7fkWdLV6
If you'd like to volunteer and help out at the event, please complete this Volunteer Registration Form https://forms.gle/BjxyZtN1nwH8mfHg7
If you cannot volunteer, but would still like to check out the event, we will be able to put you on our VIP list and you can stop by for a short tour during the event.
As a volunteer or VIP visitor, please remember that engaging with students is the exhibitor/employer/s primary focus at the event, so there won't be much opportunity for networking with volunteers/visitors. Students don't have much time in each quadrant and we want them to engage and interact with exhibitors as much as possible. Please refrain from engaging in long conversations with exhibitors during the sessions. Thank you for understanding!
