February 10 - February 14

From Our Principal
Dear JWE Families,
Hello & Happy Sunday! I hope you've had a fantastic weekend and that you and your student(s) are looking forward to the week ahead. As you likely know, there's weather in the forecast for this week. Fingers crossed it doesn't impact our school schedule and routines!
This Monday, February 10th, is our monthly Spirit Night at Bridgewater Domino's! We invite all families to take the night off from cooking and order from Domino's. A portion of the proceeds from all orders comes back to JWES provided you mention JWES and share this flyer with them when you order: JWES Domino's Spirit Night Flyer! Thanks in advance for your support!
In case you missed Dr. Shifflett's recent communication that was sent Friday afternoon/evening, February 17th & 18th are now school days for students. These were previously days off for students but given the number of days out of school due to inclement weather they will now be instructional days. This schedule change impacts any scheduled Parent Conference(s) you may have had set up. If you have concerns or want to discuss your child's progress in school, please reach out to his/her teacher and they will happily set up a time to discuss your student.
I wish you and yours a wonderful week! As always, we thank you for your partnership and support!
Sincerely,
Sara Hammill
Principal

School Attendance Matters!
Regular school attendance is necessary for each student’s academic and social success. The school day at John Wayland begins at 8:20 AM and concludes at 3:00 PM. During that time, teachers are providing important instruction and supporting activities for student understanding. Frequent absences, tardies, and/or early dismissals interrupt the continuity needed to help students master important concepts and skills. Thank you for prioritizing school attendance as we partner to promote the success of each and every student here at John Wayland.
We do understand that there are times when absence is absolutely unavoidable. If your child will miss school for any reason, please be sure you contact us to let us know. You can call the school office at 540-828-6081 or email us at: jwesattendance@rockingham.k12.va.us. Please let us know as soon as you know your child will be out but always by 9:00 am on the day of the absence.

PreK Application & Kindergarten Registration for the 2025-2026 School Year!!
March 3rd - 7th is the week that our Kindergarten Registration opens and our PreK Application process begins for the 2025-2026 school year! As a convenience to families, most of the registration process can be done online through the Rockingham County Public Schools website at: www.rcps.net The online registration portal for the 2025-2026 school year is not yet open, and will open in/around our registration week. It’s important that families register their child for next school year (2025-2026), NOT the current school year. It's also important that families register that week and not wait. This impacts our staffing and helps us keep our kindergarten class sizes to a minimum. We will, of course, welcome anyone who needs assistance to visit our school office and we’ll be happy to help you through the online registration process. We’ve highlighted some information below so families understand the process – please feel free to share this with friends and neighbors.
Application & Registration for PreK
John Wayland hosts a VPI PreK Program each year. We have 18 spots to offer to students in this class. Spots in this program are given to students/families who meet criteria set by the state of Virginia. Unfortunately, not all who apply/register will get into our PreK class.
In order to be eligible for application into our PreK Program your child must turn 4 years old by September 30, 2025. Please understand that you must provide the following documents which are REQUIRED in order to apply:
Proof of residency; i.e., a utility bill, lease agreement or mortgage statement
A copy of the child’s birth certificate
Finally, per state requirement, we are required to have proof of income for any adults in the home who are employed. We can accept a W2 or paystub.
**Any of the above documents can be emailed to jwesregistration@rockingham.k12.va.us or dropped off at our office. Once the documents have been received, we ask that you please call the school to schedule a parent interview and child screening. We have two days later in March that we will be conducting these: March 24th and 25th. As a reminder, without these required documents, your child’s application will not be complete and your child will not be considered for a screening for our PreK Program.
Kindergarten Registration
In order to register your child for Kindergarten, he/she must turn five years old by September 30, 2025, and live in the John Wayland attendance area. In early March, you may register online via the Rockingham County Public Schools Website: www.rcps.net
After completing the online registration, families are asked to please provide:
A copy of your child’s birth certificate
Proof of residency; i.e., a utility bill, lease agreement or mortgage statement
An up to date Kindergarten physical health exam AND up to date immunization record. Your child MUST have a current physical completed even if they already had one completed for PreK.
PLEASE NOTE: WE MUST HAVE THE HEALTH EXAM AND IMMUNIZATION RECORD PRIOR TO THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL OR YOUR STUDENT WILL BE UNABLE TO START SCHOOL.
These documents may be dropped off at our office or sent via email to jwesregistration@rockingham.k12.va.us .
Lastly, any family who registers their child for kindergarten will receive a follow up email from our Registrar, Krista Kane. The email will contain a digital questionnaire that we ask all rising kindergarten families to complete. The email will also contain an informational video introducing our kindergarten team and sharing information including info on August visits for students and families to meet their teacher and visit classrooms and our school.
Kindergarten Registration for Current 2024-2025 PreK Students:
RCPS sends out an email to all current PreK families with a snapcode for you to use to register your PreK student for Kindergarten next year. We've been told snapcodes will be sent out the evening of February 21st. Once you have your snapcode, access the Registration Page through the RCPS website. Please select “Returning Students 2025-2026” section on the RCPS webpage. You'll need to login using the email and password you established when you completed PreK Registration last year and then will be asked for your snapcode. PLEASE NOTE: Your child MUST have a current physical & immunizations completed even if they already had one completed for PreK. A new one is required for all kindergarteners. We have to have this on file before the first day of school.
NOTE: After families complete a registration for their soon to be kindergartener, each family will receive an email with general kindergarten information and also receive a digital survey. We will not be doing in person visits or assessments this spring. One on one visits or small group in-person classroom visits as well as a virtual parent meeting for each kindergarten class will be scheduled in August.

Anxiety and worry can show itself in many different ways, especially in children. It can impact emotions, behaviors, academic performance, and overall well being. Keeping an eye on changes such as excessive worry, sudden lack of interest in activities, trouble sleeping, or physical complaints such as stomachaches and headaches are important as these could indicate that your child may be experiencing feelings of anxiety.
You can help navigate these feelings by encouraging open communication. Sometimes, just allowing time and space to voice their worries can help children feel lighter and less alone. Additionally, keeping a consistent routine can help provide stability and predictability. This could look like evening and bedtime routines, morning routines, scheduled extracurricular activities, etc.
While it's natural to want to protect children from stress, avoiding situations that make them anxious can sometimes make things worse. Instead, acknowledge their feelings and remind them that they can handle challenges. Working with your child on coping strategies like deep breathing and positive self-talk (such as saying nice things to themselves) can also help them feel calmer and remind them that they are safe, even when they feel uncomfortable.
It's normal for kids to feel worried or anxious sometimes. However, if these feelings happen often or stop them from doing everyday activities, it might be a good idea to talk to your child’s doctor or a mental health professional. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns!
