A Message from the MUHS Leadership Team
Dear MUHS Community,
Congratulations to the very large cast of the Dido and Aeneas Project. They performed on Friday and Saturday nights this weekend in the Performing Arts Center of Mount Abe High School. The show was produced by the Opera Company of Middlebury and featured 140 students from Middlebury, Vergennes, and Mount Abe high schools. You can learn more about the project online here. What an amazing opportunity for our MUHS students, and what a sight to see so many local teens performing together!
There's just one more week of school till our long winter vacation. This is a busy time of year for many. Wishing you all moments of quiet and moments of joy in the weeks ahead.
Warmly,
Caitlin Steele, Principal
Ben Weir, Assistant Principal
Sean Farrell, Activities Director
Announcements
Congratulations to our Student Teachers!
We are thrilled to announce that TJ Korndoerfer and Evelyn Magdaleno have successfully completed their student teaching requirements at Middlebury Union High School. On December 10th, they presented their final reflections at Weybridge Elementary School, sharing insightful takeaways from their time with us. Both TJ and Evelyn brought enthusiasm, dedication, and a commitment to fostering student growth, making a positive impact on our school community. We wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors and are grateful for the time and energy they devoted to our students. Thank you, TJ and Evelyn—you will be missed!
Afternoon Traffic Flow
If you have driven through the MUHS parking lot at the end of a school day, you have probably seen how backed up the traffic pattern can get. We're trying to make the pick-up hour safer and more efficient. You can help:
- Remember, the bus circle is reserved for buses only at drop off (8:00-8:45 AM) and pick up (3:00-4:00 PM).
- To drop off or pick up students during those times, please pull past the bus circle to the sidewalk between the high school and career center. Pull forward to make room for people coming behind you.
- When using the visitor lot (the first lot north of the bus circle), please do not park anyone in or block a fire lane. Reserve accessible parking spaces for those with tags. When leaving the visitor lot, please pull out onto Charles Ave, not into the bus circle.
We have requested signs for the outside to help with clarity. In the meantime, don't be surprised to see a helper or two outside after school pointing folks in the right direction to keep the traffic flowing smoothly and safely for all. Thanks for your help with this.
Academics
Grade 10 Personal Project Exhibition
We welcomed over 300 community members, families, and students to the Grade 10 Personal Project Exhibition yesterday. The projects celebrated the diverse range of students’ interests and passions, and we learned many things about them that we didn’t know before. Thank you to all who attended yesterday’s showcase and supported our 10th graders during this process!
In a couple of weeks, Kurt Broderson at Middlebury Community Television will create a short video about yesterday’s event, sharing many of the interviews he did with students about their work. Stay tuned!

Grade 10 Hannaford Career Center Tours: 12/19
In early December, 10th grade students watched a video in advisory to learn about the many Hannaford Career Center course programs that will be available to them during 11th and 12th grade. On the morning of Thursday, December 19th, all 10th grade students will have the opportunity to tour each of the Hannaford Career Center programs. These tours are designed to help students make informed decisions about their unique course pathway over the next two years. For more information on HCC offerings and the application process, please visit their website or speak with your MUHS school counselor. Applications will be due on Friday, February 21st, 2025.
VSAC Financial Aid Forms Night
On Thursday, December 19, the School Counseling team will host VSAC Outreach Counselor, Kate Rowland for financial aid “Forms Night." This program is specifically for our students in the Class of 2025 who are planning to attend college or pursue career training in the 2025-26 academic year. There are two sessions. Families do not need to attend both, but advance registration is required. Students can sign up in the School Counseling office. Space is limited so be sure to sign up soon! Please check your email for details and a list of the paperwork that you must bring with you to Forms Night.
College and Career Center Pathways Field Trip
The school counseling team is organizing a field trip in March to St. Michaels College. This event is sponsored by VSAC. It is focused on College and Career Pathways, and there will be workshops on college admissions, trade schools and apprenticeships, essay writing, financial aid and scholarships, and how to begin the process of considering your options after high school.
Pick up a permission slip in the school counseling office ASAP as space for this field trip is limited and we want to register our students as quickly as possible.
