Thornton High School: Immigration Communication for Families
Upholding Our Commitment to Support All Students, Families and Staff
Dear Trojan students, families and staff,
Adams 12 Five Star Schools and Thornton High School is dedicated to ensuring all students and their families feel safe, welcomed and supported within our educational community. Guided by our core values of care, collaborate, empower, engage and focus on students, we are committed to protecting the rights of every student and family, regardless of immigration status, national origin, or background.
In our diverse Thornton community, we recognize some students and their families may be struggling with intensely personal questions and concerns about the national landscape regarding immigration. Our critical mission – and our obligation under the law – is to ensure our schools are safe learning environments where a student’s race, ethnicity, religion and immigration status do not create any barriers to that child’s education.
Schools as Protected Areas
Schools are designated as protected areas under current Department of Homeland Security (DHS) guidelines. This means that immigration enforcement actions – such as arrests, interviews, searches, or surveillance – should not happen on school grounds. These guidelines help ensure that students and staff can learn and work without fear of disruption.
What You Can Do
We encourage families to take the following steps to stay informed and prepared:
Update Emergency Contact Information: Ensure your school has the most current contact details for your child, including those authorized to pick up your child in case of an emergency.
Attend “Know Your Rights” Sessions: Learn about your legal rights and protections as immigrant families. (You can view in other languages by clicking on top, left English arrow)
Access Resources: Visit the Adams 12 Immigration and Newcomer Resources page for additional resources.
We remain committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming community for all. Together, we can continue to uphold our shared values and ensure a safe, nurturing environment where every student thrives.
Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to our students and families.

Chromebooks
If you went to an Adams 12 school last year, you should have your district-issued chromebook and charger. Those were NOT collected at the end of the school year. If you are a new student, stop by the library and we will check out a device and charger for you.
All students should now have a Chromebook.
If your Chromebook is not working or damaged please bring it (and the charger) to school and visit the library. Ms. Smith and Ms. Ewell in the library will help you out. If your Chromebook is lost or stolen, stop by the library and we'll talk about next steps and check out another device for you.
All students are charged a Chromebook Insurance fee of $20, $10 for reduced lunches and $0 for free lunches. Damaged Chromebooks have a $5.00 fine for the first damage, $50.00 fine for the second damage and for each additional damage the charge is $75.00. To replace a lost Chromebook the cost is $150. If your Chromebook is stolen, you MUST fill out a police report and submit that to the District to not be charged. Chromebook chargers are $35 to replace through the District. If you need a new charger and want to pay less, you can use THIS LINK. You do not have to use this link or buy through Amazon. The charger must be a 45-watt USB-C Type charger.

Academic Support (Wednesday Mornings)
Academic Support is an opportunity for students to meet with teachers in order to make up work and receive additional assistance. All teachers are available to meet with students during Academic Support. Teachers will share meeting locations with students during the first week of class. Academic Support takes place on Wednesdays from 7:40 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. Academic Support will begin on Wednesday, August 16th.
FREE/Reduce Lunch Program
Don't forget! You have to fill out an application every year.
Freshman will have 4th and 6th hour lunch. Upperclassmen will have 5th hour lunch. After a recent Colorado law was enacted, ALL students can receive free lunch. Still, it is IMPORTANT to submit an application for free or reduced benefits.
Help with School Fees: Apply for Free and Reduced Benefits
Free and reduced benefits help families and THS! Families are encouraged to apply for free and reduced benefits for this school year. By applying for free and reduced benefits, families receive assistance and it helps our school too. Here are a few ways the benefits can help:
- THS can receive additional funding to enhance the educational experience for all students. ($1,280 per approved student)
- School fees can be waived or reduced. These include athletic fees, course fees and activity and field trip fees tied to curriculum.
- Students can receive assistance with post-graduation planning, scholarships, state and national testing (including SAT, ACT, Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate), and post-secondary enrollment.
- Families can qualify for additional resources, such as medical, food and cash assistance.
- Families can receive support with community services, such as internet, gym memberships, passes to museums and cultural events.
