MPS Elementary Science for August 2023
Instructional Strategy of the Month
Six Word Story
Procedure:
- After viewing a video, looking at an image, or reading a passage, students work independently to choose the most important six words to convey the main idea.
- Students pair up, share their six words, and work together to create a shared six word list.
- You can keep that process going until your entire class is collaborating on a 6 word list.
There are many extensions to this strategy. Take it and make it your own!
Science Safety - Required
PK - 6th Students
We need to take time to teach the basics of science safety. This form contains the content of what needs to be taught to students. Please make sure your students are aware of safety procedures. Please post this on your canvas page and make parents aware that it is there for them to review. You do not need to send anything home to get a signature.
PK - 3 Science, Art, and STEM Safety
4 - 6 for teachers (Science, Art, and STEAM)
We are required by state law to have all teachers complete a safety survey within the first 30 days of school. This is a short survey that would will be able to complete in just a few minutes.
Science Professional Learning
First Quarter Options
To help work with your schedule, we are offering science professional learning in small, 20- to 30-minute chunks all through zoom. We will be focusing on a different instructional strategy at each session.
If you can attend them all, that is wonderful, but we know schedules get busy. Attend any or all sessions to help add to your teacher toolbox! If you have a great strategy you would like to share, please let me know. We always love featuring teachers in our learning time.

OSDE
OSDE Programs
OSDE is breaking ground on a lot of great learning and resources for science teachers this year. Some of the options include:
- Monthly Virtual Meetings
- Regional Meetings
- PD on your Plan
- Educator Networks
- Collaboration with Other Content Areas
If you are interested in participating in any of these free, networking opportunities, please fill out this interest form. We hope that each educator can find at least one area of interest as the different options are based on conversations and feedback from Oklahoma teachers. If there are any questions, please contact Heather.Johnston@sde.ok.gov.
Monthly Virtual Meetings (5th - 12th)
Fall science virtual meetings will be held Thursday afternoons, 4:15-5:00 pm. The theme is "Making Student Thinking Visible" and will focus on strategies that can be used by teachers to help students become actively engaged in their learning. Below are the dates and topics:
- September 21: Developing and Using Models, Register here
- By encouraging students to develop and use models, educators enable them to externalize their thinking, making it easier to identify misconceptions, track progress, and guide students toward a deeper understanding of complex science ideas. In this session, educators will learn strategies that assist students with visibly representing the interactions between different components of a system that contribute to the causes of a phenomenon.
- October 26: Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions, Register here
- Through the process of constructing explanations and designing solutions, students develop critical thinking skills, enhance their problem-solving abilities, and refine their ability to communicate ideas effectively. In this session, educators will learn strategies that assist students with explaining and revising their thinking beyond the claim-evidence-reasoning (CER) structure.
- November 16: Using Talk Moves for Student Discussions, Register here
- When educators incorporate talk moves into classroom discussions, they create an environment where students feel empowered to express their thoughts and engage with each other's ideas. In this session, educators will learn how structured prompts and strategies facilitate meaningful student dialogue, promote a deeper understanding of science ideas, and can reveal students' thought processes.
All virtual meetings are now held via the Teams platform. Registered attendees will receive an email with links to the meeting and a session dashboard about 1-week before and the day of the meeting to ensure all registrants receive the information.
Fall 2023 Regional Meetings - Date TBD
Fall 2023 Regional Meetings - Elementary & Secondary
This fall the OSDE will be coming out to a town near you to host half and/or full day workshops! We are tentatively planning for end-of-September through November, with specific dates and locations to be announced soon.
For science, there will be an elementary and secondary option. Both will be a full day workshop (9:00 am - 3:00 pm) and the elementary workshop will be integrated with math and computer science. The theme for secondary science will be "Moving Student Thinking Forward", and the elementary science theme will be "Nurturing Curiosity and Discovery". More details about each theme will be released with the dates and locations announcement!
PD on Your Plan
OSDE PD on Your Plan - Elementary & Secondary
Science PD on Your Plan is coming to OSDE Connect! When Oklahoma first adopted the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Science (OAS-S), the OSDE provided online professional development that could be completed during an educator's planning period, or whenever it fit into their schedule. We have started updating the original PD on Your Plan modules and are creating new ones, which will be available on OSDE Connect soon!
The first module will showcase how to read and unpack the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Science (OAS-S). This module will be a great resource for new science educators, administrators, informal education organizations, or anyone that may want a refresh on the vision of science education. We hope to publish this module at the beginning of September!

While we may have missed National Aviation Day (Aug. 19th), we can still celebrate by learning more about aviation.
Children's Books for Young Readers: Aviation

Snuggle up and follow along as little jet planes go through their nightly routine. This gentle and comforting story is also available as a board book for younger readers.
Alis the Aviator

Read Aloud (read by the author)
Anything is Possible
A determined sheep and his practical wolf friend try their hand at building a flying machine together, but when their plans don’t work like they wanted, they must find a new way to make their dreams come true.
Children's Books for Older Readers: Aviation
Who Were the Tuskegee Airmen?
It’s up, up, and away with the Tuskegee Airmen, a heroic group of African American military pilots who helped the United States win World War II. During World War II, black Americans were fighting for their country and for freedom in Europe, yet they had to endure a totally segregated military in the United States, where they weren’t considered smart enough to become military pilots. After acquiring government funding for aviation training, civil rights activists were able to kickstart the first African American military flight program in the US at Tuskegee University in Alabama. While this book details thrilling flight missions and the grueling training sessions the Tuskegee Airmen underwent, it also shines a light on the lives of these brave men who helped pave the way for the integration of the US armed forces.
Epic Fails: The Wright Brothers: Nose-Diving into History
A hilarious nonfiction look at two of history’s most epic “failures”: the Wright brothers, whose countless crashes and biggest failures led to ultimate success. Although the Wright Brothers are now celebrated as heroes for their groundbreaking contributions to science and engineering as the first men to successfully manage powered, piloted flight, their eventual success was built on the back of a lot of nosedives. It took the self-taught engineers years of work and countless crashes before they managed to remain airborne for a mere twelve seconds! In this hilarious first installment of the Epic Fails series, Ben Thompson and Erik Slader take readers through the the Wright Brothers’ many failed attempts at flight before achieving their groundbreaking success, laying the foundation for aviation as we know it today.
Lighter Than Air: Sophie Blanchard, the First Woman Pilot
“Smith tells Sophie’s inspiring story with a buoyant sense of wonder, fitting for a woman who was happiest in the air. Her accomplishments and passion for flight are brought beautifully to life by Tavares.” – Booklist (starred review) Take to the skies with the story of Sophie Blanchard, an extraordinary woman who is largely forgotten despite her claim to being the very first female pilot in history. In eighteenth-century France, “balloonomania” has fiercely gripped the nation . . . but all of the pioneering aeronauts are men until a shy girl comes along, devoted to her dream of flight. Sophie is not the first woman to ascend in a balloon, nor the first woman to accompany an aeronaut on a trip, but she will become the first woman to climb to the clouds and steer her own course.
