A Special Message from One of Our VERY Greatest JLS Mustang Professionals
Ms. Beth Paquette has provided us all with a very important message in this week's edition of the Mustang Messenger, so please do read it with heart...and feel free to connect with this incredible educator who has touched the lives of so many Mustangs since 1984. 💗
Our teamwork all year long has brought great success to our Mustangs academically, as well as in extracurricular opportunities to continuously build positive COMMUNICATION and RELATIONSHIPS for the best possible pathways for all engaged. As the temperatures become a bit warmer, it is only natural that our Mustangs will look forward to the summer months on the way, as we all tend to do this time of year. Let's be sure to keep our focus on our goals to work with one another to finish strong so that our time to recharge in June, July, and August is that much brighter altogether!
Have a beautiful Sunday...as usual, I'm off to do a run in this gorgeous sun!
Dr. Frank G. "Tripp" Di Nicola, III
Principal
JL Simpson Middle School
A Special Message from Ms. Beth Paquette, Band Director at JLS Since 1984
Dear Students, Parents, and Colleagues,
After 40 incredible years of teaching music here at JL Simpson MS and Loudoun County HS, I want to share that I will retire at the end of the current school year.
These past four decades have been filled with countless unforgettable moments, from our first squeaky notes to our most triumphant performances. It has been an honor and a privilege to watch each and every one of you grow not only as musicians but also as individuals. Your dedication, passion, and talent have inspired me each and every day, and I am forever grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of your musical journey.
As I reflect on the memories we've shared, I am filled with gratitude for the unwavering support of the school administration, my fellow educators, and of course, the incredible parents who have entrusted me with their children's musical education. Together, we have created a community bound by a love for music and a commitment to excellence.
While I am sad to say goodbye to this chapter of my life, I am also excited for the next chapter that awaits me. Retirement will provide me with the opportunity to spend more time with my family and to pursue personal interests.
I want to express my deepest thanks to each and every one of you for your dedication, passion, and friendship over the years. You have made my time here in Leesburg truly unforgettable, and I will cherish the memories we've created together forever.
As I embark on this new journey, please know that I will carry each of you with me in my heart always. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives.
With warmest regards,
Beth Paquette
Band Director
JL Simpson MS
A Note from Dr. Di Nicola:
We will be celebrating the outstanding Ms. Paquette in many ways as we close out the current school year, so please do stay tuned for more information. In the meantime, please do take a few moments to check out her historic timeline and grand accomplishments here in Loudoun County Public Schools below. You will see why she is undoubtedly one of the most impactful educational professionals whom our school division will ever see!
1983 - 1984: Graduated from JMU, hired by King & Queen County to teach and direct bands at King & Queen Elementary and King & Queen Central High School.
1984 - 1994: Hired by LCPS to teach and direct bands at Loudoun County High School and JL Simpson Middle School. Ms. Paquette taught and directed the Loudoun County HS marching band, jazz band, pit band (for musicals) before and after school; and the Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, and Guitar Ensemble during the school day. After teaching her HS classes in the mornings, she taught two afternoon classes at JL Simpson MS.
At this time, there were only 4 high schools and 4 middle schools in LCPS. Each HS director taught 2 to 3 classes at their HS, and also taught 2 classes per day at their feeder middle school.
By 1994, the LCHS band program had grown from 100 students to 190 students, and the newly developed HS guitar program added another 60 students. The Simpson MS program had over 300 students. This necessitated making Ms. Paquette's one job into 2.5 different jobs – HS band, an additional full-time band/guitar position at Simpson MS, and a part-time guitar position at LCHS.
1994 - 1999: Ms. Paquette taught and directed 6th and 7th grade band and taught 8th grade guitar, levels 1 and 2.
1999 - 2022: Ms. Paquette taught 6th and 7th grade brass and percussion classes, 8th grade band, and directed all bands, including jazz bands.
2022 - 2024: Ms. Paquette has been the sole band director, teaching all classes and directing all bands.
Awards & Accolades:
- Twice voted LCHS Most Valuable Teacher
- Nominated for LCPS Teacher of the Year three times
- LCHS concert and marching bands and JLSMS 8th grade and jazz bands consistently rated Superior at VBODA and Music in the Parks Band Assessments/Contests.

Medical Emergency Response Drill
On Tuesday, April 9 at 10:30am we will be conducting a Medical Emergency Response Drill.
Just as we practice fire drills, tornado drills, and lock down drills, it is important to practice management of medical emergencies in the school. Please reassure students that this is a practice drill and no real emergency is occurring. There will be several overhead announcements as well as communication on the radio during this practice event. During the drill, much like during a real emergency, the school will be placed on a hold. This restricts hallway activity while still allowing teachers to continue with lessons and activities in the classroom. The activity is expected to take 15-20 minutes to complete.
If you have any questions about our Medical Emergency Response Drill, please contact Nurse Pettit at Rene.Pettit@lcps.org. Thank you for your teamwork in promoting ongoing student and staff safety at JLS!

The Solar Eclipse is Happening Monday, April 8!
We have our solar glasses ready!
On Monday, April 8, 2024, North America and Central America will experience a solar eclipse. In Northern Virginia, the eclipse will begin at 2:04 p.m., reach maximum coverage at 3:21 p.m., and end at 4:33 p.m. The eclipse will cover 89% of the Sun.
This is a rare and exciting phenomenon that requires crucial viewing safety precautions.
Eclipse Viewing Safety (English) (Spanish) (Additional Languages)
The LCPS Department of Teaching and Learning is providing eclipse/solar glasses for all students and staff. Before receiving the eclipse/solar glasses, students and teachers discussed safety guidelines to help ensure all individuals can safely witness the eclipse.
Some important safety guidelines to follow when viewing a solar eclipse include:
- Only look directly at the sun using approved eclipse/solar glasses. Do NOT view the sun during the eclipse without protection.
- Only use approved eclipse/solar glasses that state the glasses comply with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard.
- Do NOT use eclipse/solar glasses or handheld viewers with cameras, binoculars, or telescopes.
The Family Handout Guide to Eclipse is a stellar resource for information about the eclipse, safety viewing guidelines, and ways to observe the eclipse safely. For additional information about the eclipse, please visit the LCPS Eclipse webpage (http://www.lcps.org/eclipse), or NASA’s Frequently Asked Questions.
Solar Eclipse Day Bell Schedule: Monday, April 8, 2024
We will operate on an adjusted bell schedule on Monday, April 8 in order to view the solar eclipse. Students will meet with their advisory classes at the end of the day to receive their solar eclipse viewing glasses.
Fun Solar Eclipse Guides and Resources from the NSTA
Eclipse Guides and Resources from the NSTA
The National Science Teaching Association has a variety of free resources for teachers, administrators, and families for the upcoming solar eclipse. The resources are designed to make learning about solar eclipses both engaging and safe.
The next solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, 2024, between about 2:00-4:30 p.m. Virginia will experience a partial eclipse between about 80-90% totality, depending on which part of the state in which you live.

Congratulations Ms. Hyman!
Our 6th Grade Counselor, Ms. Alison Hyman has received a submission for SHINE- Spotlighting Heroes in Education from one of our Simpson families!
This is what one of our our parents had to say about about the wonderful Ms. Hyman:
Ms. Hyman has gone above and beyond for not only my son, but also our family. There have been a lot of challenges this year for my son and myself. I have had to reach out to Ms. Hyman frequently and she has always been extremely responsive whether it is responding to emails or following up with a phone call. She is resourceful and has done a wonderful job at helping set my son up for success. Out of all the times I have come to her for help, she has always made me feel like my questions and concerns are a priority, and not just added work to her busy day, as I am sure there are multiple students and families who need her. She is by far one of the best school counselors I have worked with and her help is truly appreciated.

SHINE! Spotlighting Heroes in Education Recognition Program
HRTD is excited to launch SHINE! Spotlighting Heroes in Education, a new recognition program that aims to tell the stories of the incredible work happening throughout the division. We encourage schools to promote SHINE both inside their buildings between peers as well as with their school communities through newsletters, websites and social media as all parents, students, staff and community members are welcome to submit a nomination. Each month, Loudoun Education Foundation will choose one submission to provide additional acknowledgement and a special gift.
How it works:
We are seeking submissions for LCPS staff members at schools, central office and support locations who:
Have gone above and beyond in a situation
Have inspired others or have a heartwarming story
Are doing something unique or creative that is leading to results
In general, ANY great news!
Complete the submission form (It’s short and easy!)
The Employee Recognition office notifies the nominee as well as their supervisor of the submission
The story may be placed on the Employee Recognition webpage.
We are honored to announce that Ms. Victoria Curtis-Meyding, Mr. Derrick Jackson, and Ms. Alesha Whitmore have already been recognized by families in our community! You can find their stories on the SHINE webpage under Inspirational Stories.
Our goal is to place a spotlight on the hundreds of positive interactions taking place in LCPS each day...and especially at JLS! We look forward to seeing your celebrations of our JLS Mustang Professionals throughout 2023-2024!
