Sheiko's Family Update
August 29, 2024
Principal's Message
Hello Sheiko Families,
Wow! What a week - a new building, new friends, new experiences, a much improved car line, a shuttle to Spirit of Grace added, and a power outage! We couldn't have asked for a smoother transition - and we couldn't have done it without you! It truly takes a village!
Every week we will have a "Big Announcement". This week our big announcement is about Family Fun Night! We hope to see you at West Bloomfield High School tonight for lots of free family activities. You will not find me in the dunk tank, but helping at the line from 5-6:30. Then we can cheer on our very own WB Lakers take on Chippewa Valley at 7 p.m. Hope to see you there!
Again, thank you for all of your support!
Blaine McDowell, Principal
Design Contest! Design our new theme logo of "Dream Big" - Entries are due September 6th!
We would love for our students to design a logo on a 8 1/2" X 11 piece of computer paper with these requirements:
1 - Use the words "Dream Big" on the logo.
2 - Outline the drawing part of the design with a black marker.
3 - The theme colors are hot pink, neon blue, neon green, and yellow.
4 - We are focusing on a growth mindset and resiliency.
5 - Turn in your entry to Mrs. McDowell's office by Friday, September 6th.
6 - Every entry wins a prize from Mrs. McDowell's "Basket of Happiness"!
7 - The design winner will have their logo printed on our banners, flyers, and newsletters!
This Week in Specials Classes:
Music (Mrs. Virta): This week in music, kindergarten and 1st graders practiced using our singing voices, keeping the beat and playing egg shakers. We sang the storybook, Pete the Cat together, too.
The second, third, and fourth graders sang, “Whacky Do Re Mi” and sang solfege syllables. We also learned a body percussion piece! We ended by playing musical games to get to know each other.
A great start to the year in music with new and returning students!

Back to School Forms
Every form you need to fill out for the start of the school year and links to key departments are all on the Back 2 School Central page under the Parents dropdown menu on the district website wbsd.org.
- Click the Nutrition button if your child has an allergy or you might qualify for free/reduced lunch. We encourage families to continue to apply for meal benefits online at westbloomfield.familyportal.cloud (more information on that is in an article below). These supplemental programs have the potential to offer additional support for reduced priced sports, ACT, SAT, college application and AP exam waivers. This information is also critical in determining the amount of money our schools receive from a variety of State and Federal supplemental programs.
- Click Transportation for the handbook and bus tracker. Additional forms were posted August 1.
- Go to PowerSchool to update your address or preferred language for communication. This is required by the first day of school!
- Find the 2024-25 calendar and bell times all in one place.
It is critically important that we have updated contact information for you in the event of an emergency. WBSD has the ability to call, text and email - please make sure you're signed up for all options. You can unsubscribe at any time.
Nutrition Services
Free & Reduced Lunch forms have a new name - still important to fill out
The new school year has opened in meal magic so we are ready for free and reduced applications to start coming in. We are serving free meals under Michigan School Meals again this year, but we still need all families to complete an application. The free and reduced meals application is now called the "Education and Nutrition Benefits Application." This is because it is tied to other benefits that families may receive such as Summer EBT. These supplemental programs have the potential to offer additional support for reduced priced sports, ACT, SAT, college application and AP exam waivers. This information is also critical in determining the amount of money our schools receive from a variety of State and Federal supplemental programs.
Here is an FAQ letter answering Frequently Asked Questions. All of our applications are taken 100% online.
Our special dietary needs form is also posted online. This needs to be filled out and returned to nutrition services for any students that may have severe medical food allergies. Thank you!
Movie Night 9/6 - $3/person supports school activities
Join us for our first ever Community Movie Night, Friday, 9/6 at 6 p.m. on the West Bloomfield High School football field. $3 cash/each person supports the school activity fund and concessions profits will benefit the athletic department. Bring a blanket or a chair and watch Lyle with our Laker Nation in our largest outdoor classroom (thank you for the bond that made our scoreboard possible).
Mileage Club is Back! Check out the Sign Up to Help!
At Sheiko Elementary, we love our parent volunteers! Starting September 16th, we will have our "Mileage Club" back for our students! This is where students enjoy running or walking outside, and then they earn "tokens" to keep on a metal ring on their backpack. It is a super fun way to enjoy exercising and hanging out with friends at recess! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20F0B4BA9AB28A6F85-49060440-mileage
Mr. Peace is Coming to Sheiko Elementary!
Thank you to our very own West Bloomfield Coalition and LaFontaine for sponsoring this anti-bullying assembly for our students on September 11th. Mr. Peace is a tradition at Sheiko, and we can't wait to hear his message again this year!
