PICTURES AND NEWS
PRIZE PATROL: RAFFLED GIFTS WERE DISTRIBUTED TO STAFF
Our Mascot, Raider, and Ms. Trainer set out to deliver gifts to raffle-winning staff members around the building every hour during Thursday's school day. Raider jammed to loud pop music playing on a boom box while being pushed around on a cart by Ms. Trainer. The gift cards, tickets to various venues, or other special prizes provided by staff members and local businesses were handed out to the winners at each classroom or worksite. Winners included various teachers, interventionists, a custodian, and a nurse. The delivery of these prizes provided happy moments of distraction throughout the day.
NAVIGATORS (EMMONS) DAIRY IN THE CLASSROOM
Each year, Shelburne Farms provides St. Albans City School kindergartener classroom groups with visits by a dairy educator: in our case, Ms. Virginia. Her goal is to teach our students about farming and the anatomy of dairy cows, plus nutrition and dairy foods. When these pictures were taken on Thursday morning (5-9-2024), Ms. Virginia was explaining the differences between various breeds of cows and how all cows eat and process grass. She had the students rapt attention.
SPHERO ROBOT PAINTINGS
Students in Triumph created a collaborative tree using Sphero robots. Students explored painting with the Sphero Bolts by coding and driving the robots. The paintings became collage paper. Students used laser cut leaf stencils to create leaves for the tree. - Ms. Teenyanoff
INVESTIGATORS FIELD TRIP TO HARD'ACK POOL
The Invesstigators enjoyed their time in the covered pool and on the newly built playground nearby. 5-9-2024. Ms. Chadwick shared some pictures from the trip.
NAVIGATORS (BOULET) STEAM TIME
Ms. Bertucci brought in boxes filled with cardboard, string and many other odds and ends. Normally, these leftover items or recycleables would be sent off with a trash handling service quickly. However, those items kept and collected by the makerspace staff can be repurposed for stimulating creativity in young children. Each child in Ms. Boulet's PreK classroom grabbed a STEAM box to take to a section of the classroom to build with.
EXPLORERS SOCCER P.E.
It was time to learn some of the basics of soccer in Ms. Heidi Andrew's small gym classroom on Thursday, 5-9-2024. Explorers students began by passing balls back and forth to each other. Students then progressed to a game of indoor soccer which had them sweaty and tired by the end of the period.
EVENTS, OPPORTUNITIES OR INFORMATION
FREE TREES FOR ST. ALBANS RESIDENTS
St. Albans residents are eligible for trees to plant in their yard through Community Canopy, an Arbor Day Foundation program.
Residents register for up to two free trees at vtcommunityforestry.org/trees. The online sign-up process guides participants to the best locations to plant trees to help cool their homes, reduce energy usage, and save money. Residents can also sign-up by phone by calling the Arbor Day Foundation at 855-234-3801.
The trees must be reserved in advance and will be available for pick-up on Saturday, June 1, 10am-12pm at the St. Albans City School (29 Bellows Street).
The tree giveaway is being coordinated by the St. Albans City School and the Vermont Urban & Community Forestry Program, a partnership between the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation and University of Vermont Extension.
THIS SUMMER READ BOOKS TO WIN ACCESS AND PRIZES AT THE CHAMPLAIN VALLEY FAIR
The Champlain Valley Fair has partnered with Libraries around the state to promote reading. St. Albans Free Library is one of those librarys. Students who read three books over the summer can qualify for a free 1-day pass to the fair, a coupon for a $5 ice cream, and a free book.
