Avondale High School Hosts Annual Grand Jacket Event
Excitement filled the halls of Avondale High School last week as students, staff, and community members came together for the annual Grand Jacket event—a cherished tradition that brings the school to life with student-led activities, theme days, performances, and fundraisers.
Throughout the week, the Avondale community rallied together to raise an impressive $4,600 for Avondale Advocates, a new initiative developed by AHS Leadership. The purpose of Avondale Advocates is to reinvest these funds directly into the district, ensuring that students, staff, and the greater community benefit in ways that make a personal impact.
As the week concluded, the success of Grand Jacket stood as a testament to the strength of the Avondale community. With $4,600 raised and a new fund established, Avondale Advocates is set to create lasting, positive change within the district.
Congratulations to Chelsea Howe, the winner of Grand Jacket, and all our high school students for their remarkable achievements!
GATE Magnet School Dominates 2025 Battle of The Books
Avondale GATE Magnet School students have proven their reading prowess in this year's Battle of the Books competitions! At the Auburn Hills Battle of the Books, our teams swept the podium, taking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place—an impressive achievement that highlights their dedication and teamwork.
In the Rochester Hills competition, things got even more exciting! Two Avondale GATE teams, along with another, were part of an unprecedented three-way tie for 1st place—marking the first tie in the event's last 10 years! After a mini battle to break the tie, both of our GATE teams ended up tied for 2nd place overall.
These remarkable results showcase the hard work and reading enthusiasm of our students. A huge congratulations to all the teams for their outstanding performances!
Avondale Choirs Shine at District Festival
The Avondale Choir Department is celebrating an incredible achievement as both our middle school and high school choirs excelled at the Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA) District 16 Choir Festival! Held at Stoney Creek High School, this event showcased the dedication and talent of our students, who earned top ratings and secured their place at the state competition.
On March 10th and 11th, our high school choirs took the stage, impressing the judges and earning five 1st Division ratings. Congratulations to our Concert Choir, Women of Concert Choir, Men of Avondale, Women’s Chorus, and Mixed Chorus for their outstanding performances!
Just days later, on March 12th, Avondale Middle School continued the tradition of excellence, with both the 6th Grade Choir and the combined 7th & 8th Grade Choir also receiving 1st Division ratings. Their hard work and dedication were recognized with high praise from the judges.
With these remarkable results, all seven Avondale choirs have qualified for the State Choir Festival in April! We are incredibly proud of these talented students for their commitment to musical excellence and look forward to seeing them shine at the next level.
Congratulations to all our choir students and our director, Kevin Cornwell, for upholding Avondale’s tradition of excellence in vocal music!
Avondale Wind Ensemble Earns Superior Ratings at MSBOA Band & Orchestra Festival
The Avondale High School Wind Ensemble recently traveled to Warren Woods Tower High School to participate in the MSBOA Band & Orchestra Festival, where they performed for a panel of four adjudicators. Their outstanding musicianship earned them the highest possible rating—SUPERIOR (1st Division)!
This incredible achievement qualifies the ensemble for the State Festival and marks a significant milestone for both the students and the Avondale band program. Congratulations to our talented musicians for their hard work and dedication!
AVONDALE STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Liam Kakuda: Founder of BEaUTiFLi
Avondale High School student Liam is making a difference through his passion for art and his heart for helping others. As the founder of BEaUTiFLi, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Liam has created a way to bring joy to children in hospitals and shelters through homemade cards filled with encouragement and warmth.
BEaUTiFLi is currently partnering with Trinity Health Oakland, Grace Centers of Hope, and Carehouse to deliver these heartfelt messages to children in need. Thanks to the support of local student organizations—including Avondale Middle School Student Council and Leadership, Woodland Leadership Club, and Avondale High School National Honor Society—hundreds of cards have been created and shared.
Liam’s dedication to using art as a way to uplift others is an inspiration to the entire Avondale community. Keep up the amazing work, Liam!
