PICTURES AND NEWS
100 DAYS INTO THE SCHOOL YEAR CELEBRATIONS
A number of classroom groups dressed up as 100 year old people. Others posed with 100 day shirts and good friends. At least one classroom read about the 100 day way point. One or more of the Travelers classrooms posted kindness notes in the hallway and hoped to have 100 on the wall soon. Last, Investigators 1st grade students each made necklaces with 100 fruit loops. There were likely other ways of celebrating the day that were not recorded.
RUBBER DUCK HUNT ON THE 100TH DAY OF SCHOOL
The rubber duck hunting activity organized by Mr. Brown, Ms. Smith and sponsored by Nucar on the hundredth day of school was a huge hit. One hundred rubber ducks were numbered and hidden in classrooms and public spaces around the school. After students arrived in school and had breakfast, they were allowed to search for the ducks. When found, the ducks were brought to the lobby desk and tabulated on a duck board. After that they were brought to two shiny jeeps parked out in the front of school. The excitement around this celebratory activity remained high throughout Wednesday.
INVESTIGATORS 1ST GRADE 100TH DAY NECKLACES
Substitute teacher, Ms. Williams, helped her students assemble fruit loops necklaces.
FEBRUARY'S WALKING WEDNESDAY
We completed the only Walking Wednesday for the month of February. Seventy one students and seventeen adults walked to school on a cold, clear and still morning on February 7th. The Voyagers had the best turnout by far. Winter months tend to be intimidating here, so our student numbers were slightly above average for the Month of February. They received stickers and pencils as usual, although the designs were fresh for the event. Thank you to all who joined in. March 13th is the next date scheduled for Walking Wednesday.
SPHERO ROBOTS AWARDED TO VOYAGERS
Last Fall, Renaissance held a robot building contest during their Operation Happiness food drive. Classrooms could build a "robot" with cans and packages of food and then send a picture of their robot to Renaissance. Renaissance voted for the best robot building classroom or learning community to determine who would receive one or more Sphero robots. Team Voyagers had the winning entries. On February 7th, representatives from Renaissance visited team Voyagers to present three Sphero robot kits, one for each classroom. The elected representatives from each Voyagers grade shook hands with the Renaissance students and received their robot.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Black History Month is a celebration of Black American history and achievement that takes place each February in the United States. It is also called African American History Month. During Black History Month, many people learn about the accomplishments of individual Black Americans as well as the contributions of Black people to American history. This February, we are excited to celebrate Black voices with books that center around Black lives, Black joy, and Black stories that are sure to resonate far beyond a single month of the year. Join us as we #ShareBlackStories and checkout books from our City School library collection.
SUSPENDED
Miles Morales is just your average teenager. He has unexpectedly become totally obsessed with poetry and can never seem to do much more than babble around his crush. Nothing too weird. Oh! Except, just yesterday, he used his Spidey superpowers to save the world (no biggie) from an evil mastermind called The Warden. And the grand prize Miles gets for that is…
Suspension.
But what begins as a long boring day of in-school suspension is interrupted by a little bzzz in his mind. His Spidey Sense is telling him there’s something not quite right here, and soon he finds himself in a fierce battle with an insidious…termite?! His unexpected foe is hiding a secret, one that could lead to the destruction of the world’s history—especially Black and Brown history—and only Miles can stop him. Yeah, just a typical day in the life of your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
DREAM BUILDER: THE STORY OF ARCHITECT PHILIP FREELON
You've seen the building. Now meet the man whose life went into it.
Philip Freelon's grandfather was an acclaimed painter of the Harlem Renaissance. His father was a successful businessman who attended the 1963 March on Washington. When Phil decided to attend architecture school, he created his own focus on African American and Islamic designers. He later chose not to build casinos or prisons, instead concentrating on schools, libraries, and museums--buildings that connect people with heritage and fill hearts with joy. And in 2009, Phil's team won a commission that let him use his personal history in service to the country's: the extraordinary Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Dream Builder: The Story of Architect Philip Freelon celebrates a contemporary black STEAM role model, a man whose quiet work enabled the creation of an iconic building reflecting America's past and future. With a stirring text by Kelly Starling Lyons, vibrant pictures by Laura Freeman, and an afterword from Philip Freelon himself, it is sure to inspire the next generation of dreamers and builders.
STAMPED
RACE. Uh-oh. The R-word.
But actually talking about race is one of the most important things to learn how to do.
Adapted from the award-winning, bestselling Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You, this book takes readers on a journey from present to past and back again. Kids will discover where racist ideas came from, identify how they impact America today, and meet those who have fought racism with antiracism. Along the way, they’ll learn how to identify and stamp out racist thoughts in their own lives.
