Sewing Machine
made by Elias Howe
Introduction
In 1846, Elias Howe created the sewing machine. The sewing machine binds materials together with thread. It stitches fabric together without using the use of hands. It made making clothes very cheap and fast. There are many gears, pulleys, and motors to make it work. It might seem very complicated but in the end, its quite simple.
Elias Howe, maker of sewing machine.
Elias Howe made the invention of the sewing machine in 1846. He was spurred to invent the machine after he had a dream that a king had given him 24 hours to create one or he would be killed. He woke up at 4:00am and jumped out of bed and quick tinkered in his workshop and by 9:00am, he had a plan. Although it was only a dream that got him started, he ended up creating a successful product.
The Sewing Machine
The sewing machine included a needle with an eye at the point,a shuttle operating beneath the cloth to form a locked stitch, and an automatic feed.
Lockstitch
A stitch that has single needle threading.
How the Sewing Machine Works
Howe had made a machine that could go 250 stitches a minute. The process used a curved needle with an eye at the tip that carried the thread through the cloth. The loop of the needle was locked by a thread that passed through to the shuttle. The seamstress hung in the materials on a plate in front of the needle. The stitch was tighter and stronger than any previous stitch made. It was called a lockstitch.
