Be sure to talk with your Lions each night about what standards they are working on and what activities they are doing to master those standards! Here is some general information to get the conversation started.
In Math, students use the Open Up curriculum. Click here to see the Open Up lessons for all grade levels! Click here to see the Math 1 Open Up lessons. 6th graders are working on base ten and arithmetic; 7th graders are practicing with expressions, equations, and inequalities; and 8th grade working on functions and volume.
In ELA, students launched their next unit of book studies. 6th grade is reading Two Roads, 7th is exploring texts from the Harlem Renaissance, and 8th is reading Maus.
In Social Studies, 6th graders are learning about the ancient Greeks, 7th grade is learning about WWI, and 8th grade is exploring the industrial revolution.
In Science, 6th graders are working on waves, 7th graders are learning about organisms and evolution, and 8th graders are learning about diseases and microbiology.
Math Moments
6th Grade
In 6th grade, students are using the concepts of base ten and decimals to explore real-life applications. See if they can apply that knowledge to this scenario. A bag of chocolates is labeled to contain 0.384 pound of chocolates. The actual weight of the chocolates is 0.3798 pound. Are the chocolates heavier or lighter than the weight stated on the label? Explain how you know. How much heavier or lighter are the chocolates than stated on the label? Show your reasoning.
7th Grade
In 7th grade, students are learning about expressions, equations, and inequalities. See if they can apply the concepts to these scenario. In the cafeteria, there is one large 10-seat table and many smaller 4-seat tables. There are enough tables to fit 200 students. Write an inequality whose solution is the possible number of 4-seat tables in the cafeteria.
8th Grade
In 8th grade, students are learning about volume. See if they can apply those formulas to this scenario. A scoop of ice cream has a 1.5 inch radius. How tall should the ice cream cone of the same radius be in order to contain all of the ice cream inside the cone?
Announcements
NAEP Test on Wednesday!
On Wednesday, 100 randomly selected 8th graders will participate in the NAEP test. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from our state assessments because it is a common measure of achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation's Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents/guardians, policymakers, and the public.

Character Trait of the Month
In February, students will be talking about PERSEVERANCE in their Friday SEL lessons. Watch this video about perseverance with your student: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eY-SCapwK3g. What does it mean to have grit? What was a time in your life when you showed perseverance? Share that experience with your student. Let them share an example with you? Why is persevering hard sometimes? How does this idea relate to students' experiences in school?
