What We're Reading: VPL Book Chats
Our latest read for our staff book club was 'The Measure' by Nikki Erlick. This was my personal pick because the premise intrigued me: suddenly, everyone 21 and over wakes up to a small box with a string inside that represents the length of their life. People are eventually pigeonholed into two different groups: short-stringers and long-stringers. As you can imagine, trouble ensues with discrimination. It had us asking ourselves: would we want to know the length of our lives? Would we change anything? Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think! Happy reading, friends!

"The Last List of Mabel Beaumont" by Laura Pearson
I checked this book out on a whim, and it does not disappoint. From the title and book cover looking interesting and begging to be opened this story line is relatable on so many levels.
Mabel Beaumont is an interesting character who simply has not discovered living life to its fullest until she suddenly loses her husband of sixty-two years. Even though she had a loving relationship with Arthur there was something always missing. Did Arthur realize this and leave one last list for Mable to fulfill? His insight to hire a caretaker to assist her in the beginning of her grieving process kicks off a rollercoaster of emotions throughout this book. She discovers who she is while being surrounded by new friends. Mabel realizes what a privilege it is to learn something new at her age, to keep growing and to have a second life of her choosing.
May we all be brave like Mabel.
Happy reading friends,
Lisa
'The Night We Lost Him' by Laura Dave (why do I keep wanting to write Laura Dern??!!) is my first book by this author and I just adored her writing style so much that I saved a few passages. Discovering an author that can combine the thrill of a mystery with poignant writing that speaks to me about love, loss, and grief is a winner in my book! Siblings that have lost touch due to their father's multiple marriages and the distance he kept between them suddenly lose him tragically and discover he had a secret that none of them knew. This was a slow burn mystery read that unearthed the secret emotional life of a father whilst touching on the tenderness of love.
"No one wants to think about what we're up against. And with love, with standing up and trying to love anyone, we are up against ourselves too. We are up against our heartbreak and our pasts and our ideas about how things should be. We are up against our most primal pain, like a living-breathing barricade, blocking the space between where we've gotten stuck and where we most want to go."
~Laura Dave from 'The Night We Lost Him'
I'm now off to read 'The Last Thing He Told Me' also by Laura Dave since I loved this book so much! Happy reading, friends! ~Heather
It's been a bit since I grabbed a book that I couldn't put down. I recently read and reviewed a different Jason Rekulak book, and this book was completely different! Sometimes authors stay consistent and predictable, but not Rekulak.
This supernatural thriller book will have you turning page after page. The story follows the character, Mallory Quinn, who recently got out of rehab and starts nannying a boy named Teddy. Things are going great for Mallory, and she is finally starting to put her life back together, but she senses something eerie going on with Teddy. Teddy, who is only five years old, starts drawing disturbing pictures that a little boy shouldn't know how to draw. Mallory grows concerned for Teddy and his safety. After all, there was once a murder in the cottage that she is now living in. Check this book out and read if Mallory can decipher Teddy's drawings.
