Chapman Family Weekly Update
September 14, 2019
Open House a Success!
Thank you to all the families that joined us at our Open House last week! We had an amazing turn out and it was so great to see so many people anxious to tour our building. We are so excited for the new and continued updates and improvements to the building. Thank you, also to the custodial crew and teachers that made the building sparkle, shine and ready for our students. We are now in full swing and it is amazing to see all the great learning in all of the classrooms. Don't forget to ask your student what their favorite thing they learned at school was or what they thought was the most challenging thing they did at school. These questions will spark deeper conversations about your child's day. Also, never hesitate to contact your teacher or me if you have any questions.
Talk like a Pirate Day: Yes! Its an actual day that we celebrate at Chapman. Thursday, September 19th students are encouraged to dress in their best pirate gear and find an opportunity to speak like a pirate throughout the day! So fun! (Remember, no swords or hooks for safety purposes)
Crossing Needed: We need a crossing guard at Chapman. This is a paid position through edustaff. You will be a rock star by safely crossing our students before and after school. Its easy and fun! Please contact the board office or Chapman for more information.
Lunch Monitors Needed: After being a crossing guard, you can also be a lunch monitor! This is also a paid position through Chartwells. You can call Chapman or Gibraltar Food Service for more information.
PTO Meeting: Come and join us for the first PTO meeting of the year at 6 PM on Tuesday this week at Chapman!
BWW Night: Come and support Chapman by dining in or ordering take out from BWW on Wednesday, September 18th starting at 4PM.
Picture Day is September 18th. You should be getting more information from your classroom teachers.
Carpool: Our carpool line in the morning can still get better and more efficient. Please pull as far as possible up in the lane. Students should exit from curbside/passenger side only for safety purposes. Please be patient and do not pass on the left- we have to crosswalks and we do not want anyone hurt. Also, DO NOT move the orange cones before or after school. They are there for safety purposes as well. Thank you for all of your help and patience.
Important Information from previous newsletter:
Attached below is a letter to all elementary families from all the principals in the district explaining the safety procedures regarding our new entrances and attendance procedures. They are the same for every elementary building. Please make sure you read this letter carefully and contact me with any questions or if you need clarification.
Doors will open at Chapman every morning at 8:25 AM. If your child eats breakfast at school, please have them at school at this time so they have ample time to eat and they don't miss instruction time.
School and instruction time begins promptly at 8:38 AM. Dismissal is at 3:43. Kindergartner students will be released out the back classroom doors. Parents can pick up on the playground by the basketball hoops. First and Second grade will be released out the main entrance. Third through fifth grade will be released at the entrance to the left of the main entrance.
Lunch times have been adjusted for some grade levels. See below for each grade level's recess and lunch times. This year we are scheduling recess before lunch. Research shows that students are more productive and successful in the afternoon if they eat lunch after recess. The September breakfast and lunch menu is also attached below.

Other Important Information
Birthdays:
GSD's policy does not allow cupcakes/sweets for birthdays. We would love to celebrate your child's birthday with non-edible treats such as pencils or a book donation to the media center or classroom.New Flexible Seating for 2nd and 3rd Grade:
2nd and 3rd grade classrooms have brand new furniture in their classrooms. There are a variety of seating options and we are excited about the flexibility that this seating will provide our classrooms.
Volunteer Forms and i-Chat Requirements:
All volunteers in the building will be required to fill out a volunteer form and the school will run an i-Chat check for safety and security purposes. You should find these forms in your first week packets from your teacher. My advice is to fill these out and turn them in as soon as possible. Remember ANY volunteer needs to fill these out. You can pick up extra copies in the office as needed. This requirement does include volunteering for classroom parties.
Continued Updates Throughout the Building:
We are not done! We still have some improvements coming to the building that will happen over the school year. It is very exciting to see the continued updates and improvements throughout the last year!
