Class of 2025 Newsletter
October 2024
A Message From Your 2025 Team:
Class of 2025 Families,
In less than two weeks we will wrap up Fall Semester 1 of Senior year. With Finals taking place on October 9th and 10th it is important that seniors are taking advantage of the DEN before or after school to get help and attending tutorial this Friday to take advantage of any final makeup opportunities.
October also marks the opening of all college applications and our annual ASVAB opportunity (October 11). Students are able to receive college, trade and vocational school application help every Wednesday during Club College. And for students considering the military, there is an opportunity to take the ASVAB. Students should email glt2025@helixcharter.net for more information and to sign up. The ASVAB is also a career exploration tool for students not interested in the military as it provides information about job trends, jobs compatible to your skills and interests and so much more.
Lastly, as quickly as Senior year is flying by for adults, it is going by twice as fast for our Seniors. They have a expressed that they are a ball of emotions. There is excitement and elation mixed with fear and uncertainty, and a healthy dash of stress. Please continue to check in, offer support and reminders and reach out to the the Grade Level Team for assistance or good news you would like to share with us.

2025 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists
We are proud to announce that 12th graders, Lukas Beer and Peyton Kertson are Semifinalists in the 70th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Along with 16,000 other Semifinalists, they have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 6,870 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $26 million that will be offered in the spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level. About 95% of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
Over 1.3 million juniors in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2023 PSAT, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.
Congratulations & Good Luck, Lukas and Peyton!

The DEN: Before and After School Academic Support
We are so excited to introduce The DEN, a student-centered space that provides academic support both before school and after school in ExL, Room 1600.
The DEN is staffed by Academic Coaches and Credentialed Teachers in order to provide student support and facilitate achievement. Students can come in before school and/or after school to receive help in all subjects. Here are some of the support systems the DEN will provide: tutoring, remediation, test prep, test proctoring, timed writings, study groups and student-centered support in any academic capacity.
Tutorials on Fridays
Beginning this Thursday, Helix parents/guardians will receive an automated phone call and email notification, if your student is currently failing one or more classes. The purpose of this call is to ensure that you are aware of your student's academic standing and to encourage timely intervention.
Students who receive this notification should attend tutorial sessions on Friday morning, starting at 8:30am, with their teacher(s). This will provide them with the necessary support to improve their grades and understanding of the subject matter.
Please review the tutorial schedule below.
2025 AP Exam Registration and Ordering
If you are currently taking an AP Class please read the information below regarding the AP Exams in May.
AP exam ordering is a THREE step process:
If students do not have a College Board account, the first step is to create an account with the College Board website.
The second step is to join the class using a unique join code obtained from their AP teachers (teachers will help students with this process during class).
Once students have an account and have joined their instructor’s course, the third step is to pay for the exam through Helix (either at the Dawg House or online).
**Exams will not be ordered without the completion of all three steps.
Students who do not qualify for a Fee Reduction: the first exam will cost $99.00.
Additional exams will cost $67.00 each (Helix helps to subsidize additional exam costs).
Students who qualify for a fee reduction will pay $5.00 for each exam, as long as they are approved on time (fee reduction is NOT possible without filling out the LCFF survey - see instructions below).
Students who are eligible for a fee reduction must be approved through the Helix Alternative Income Local Control Funding Formula Form (LCFF), which was completed during Summer Conferences. If your household situation has changed since you submitted the LCFF Alternative Form this summer, or your family has not completed this form, please resubmit ASAP.
If your household qualifies under the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF), you will be eligible for a reduced fee of $5 for each exam. To ensure your application is approved before the ordering deadline, please complete the LCFF form as soon as possible (all applications must be submitted no later than 9/10/2024).
The office will verify the eligibility and inform the Finance office, ensuring you are charged the correct fee. The Finance Office will receive a list of qualifying students starting 9/20/2024 and you will be able to check your eligibility by adding the exam to your online cart or asking Ms. Yeagle at the Dawg House. You can purchase your exams for $5.00 between 9/20/2024 and 10/31/2024. Please note that any exam purchased after 10/31/2024 will incur a late fee of $40.00, which is charged by the College Board, not Helix.
Students who do not qualify under the LCFF can purchase their exams online or in person through the Helix Web Store as soon as the window opens on 9/1/2024. The last day to purchase an exam without a late fee will be 10/31/2024.
The Dawg House does not accept personal checks, so all purchases at school should be with a credit card or cash during the Finance Office Hours (see Ms. Yeagle in the Dawg House). Student hours are: Monday through Thursday 8-8:25am, Lunch, and 3:30-3:45pm, and Fridays 8-8:25am, Lunch, and 3:30-3:45 Parent and Community hours are: Mon thru Thurs 8-12:20 and 1:20-3:45, Fridays 8-11:45 and 12:45-3:45
Please triple-check to make sure you are registering for the correct exam!
Please Note: Any exam purchased after 10/31/2024 will risk not being ordered and receive a late fee of $40. In addition, any unused or canceled exams will also be charged a fee of $40 (these fees are administered through the College Board and Helix cannot reverse these charges).
Should you have any questions, contact Ms. Skullerud (skullerud@helixcharter.net) or Mrs. Trevino (trevino@helixcharter
LivingWorks Youth Summit
LivingWorks is committed to equipping students with the skills to support those experiencing a mental health crisis. From now until December 2024, LivingWorks Youth Summit is offering California high school students with a FREE 90 minute suicide prevention training.
Given the importance of this topic, we will award any student who completes the training 3 hours of community service upon submission of their certification of completion. Please submit your certificate to Ms. Markey. Click the link below to access the training.
Join the Helix PTSA!
We hope all families will consider joining the Helix PTSA, click here to join. There is no commitment involved. It is just an annual, one-time donation of $13. The funds raised through PTSA memberships go directly back to the school and students for scholarships, special programs and anything the students may need! The more members we have, the greater access we have to grants and programs that will support Helix students.
***Any students interested in applying for PTSA scholarships (we give out $5,000 each year) must be PTSA members.***
If you want to make more of a commitment, consider joining the PTSA board. This means attending one meeting per month (if you are available) and being on an email distribution that shares information about upcoming volunteer opportunities. The meetings are typically held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 5pm at Helix or via Zoom. If you are interested, please email PTSA President Dave Hardenburger at helixptsapresident@gmail.com.
If you just want to be informed about upcoming events and school news, follow Helix PTSA on social media on Facebook and Instagram.
Club College: Every Wednesday
Club College meets every Wednesday from 3:30pm-5:30pm in Room 210. If you do not have a 4th period, you may head over to Room 180 for Club College before moving to Room 210 after school.
College Workshops
ASVAB: Friday, 10/22/24
The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a standardized test that reveals areas of strength and ability in science, math, and language. Taking the test is one of the first steps before enlisting in the military. It helps to match people with a job where their strengths will be best suited.
Even if a student does not plan on entering the military, this is a great career exploration tool!
ASVAB PREP
You may do your own practice exams by clicking the following link: ASVAB
If a student is interested in taking the exam, or if you have any questions, please email the Class of 2025 GLT at glt2025@helixcharter.net.
Letter of Recommendation
If you require a letter of recommendation for a College Application or Scholarship Application, please provide teachers/staff members with at least 10 days to complete. It is a great idea to give letter writers a thorough Brag Sheet to help them write the best letter about you!
Almost every student applying to college has the following traits: hard working, great grades, focused and determined. Your letter of recommendation is an opportunity for us to tell the colleges more about you BEYOND the traits that everyone in college has, how can we tell a more unique story for you? The more thoughtful you are in responding to each of the questions, the better job we can do for you. TELL us about you!!! Remind us of a lesson or conversation that we may have had that was pivotal for you. Admissions officers do not want to read the cover of your book in these letters, they want the heart of the book in them.
***REMEMBER...ONLY REQUEST A LETTER IF YOU TRULY REQUIRE A LETTER.***
Transcript Request
Only request a transcript when the college asks for it, not earlier as it may get lost. Please make all requests through Xello.
Student athletes should see Mrs. Street or Ms. Markey for transcript requests for college coaches or the NCAA.
***REMEMBER...ONLY REQUEST A TRANSCRIPT WHEN THE COLLEGE ASKS FOR IT.***
