Monthly Update on Specials Classes
Art with Ms. Kim
Artists have been learning about texture and form, exploring these elements of art through clay.
- Kindergarten made clay pinch pots, using their hands to shape the clay into a pot, and glazed them. We also made texture prints using a variety of found objects and painted paper collages inspired by the illustrations of Eric Carle.
- 1st Grade made clay pinch pot monsters, starting with the pinch pot method they learned last year in Kindergarten. We created smaller details, such as eyes, teeth and horns, and scored them and used slip, a mixture of clay and water, to attach them on. They were fired and then we glazed them, using different colors to emphasize details, and they were fired again in the kiln.
- 2nd Grade made animal face relief sculptures out of clay, starting with a slab. We added details, like eyes and ears, scored them and used slip, a mixture of clay and water, to attach them on. They were fired and then we glazed them, using different colors to emphasize different parts of the animal's face, and they were fired again in the kiln.
- 3rd Grade worked with The Beautiful Stuff Project, an organization based in Somerville, to design and create a mosaic sign for the Hosmer Learning Garden. It is hanging up now! This project was funded by a grant from the Watertown Cultural Council. We also made clay coil pots, shaping and rolling the clay using our hands and scoring and slipping 6 coils on top of the base. After they were fired, we glazed them and they were fired again.
- 4th Grade made clay triangular coil pots, shaping and rolling the clay using our hands and scoring and slipping 4 coils on top of the base and also making a slab lid using relief techniques. After they were fired, we glazed them using different colors to emphasize our design and they were fired again.
- 5th Grade made an independent clay project, choosing either a flat relief, pinch pot, coil pot or slab box construction. We came up with multiple design ideas, chose one and created our work using the techniques connected to the format we chose. We glazed our work after it was fired, using different colors to emphasize our design and they were fired again.

Kindergarten I can sing and dance
Essential Questions: How do I move my body to music? How do music and dance bring people together? Why do people dance? This month we are putting together our skills of keeping a steady beat, moving our bodies and singing simple songs. circle mixers are a great way to hear everyone in our class sing close up.
1st Grade I can demonstrate my understanding of musical form. I can identify music by the Musicians of the Month.
2nd Grade I can sing in two part rounds and canons; I can move to a complex rhythmic pattern while singing.
3rd Grade I can compose my own recorder melody and share it with the class. I can sing a three-part partner song.
4th Grade I can play melodies using pitches B, A, G, and E on the soprano recorder. I can say and play rhythms with sixteenth note patterns.
5th Grade I can play melodies using pitches B, A, G, high C, and high D, and low D on the soprano recorder. I can also read and play in two ostinato-like parts, with a variety of instruments.I can identify music by the Musicians of the Month.
This month has invited a lot of exciting and fun performance opportunities!
Fourth and fifth grade worked on learning a patriotic song to sing for the Watertown veterans for Memorial Day. At the end of the Memorial Day ceremony on May 24, all students stood and sang “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” It was a really special moment for all of us. Thank you to all veterans!
All third, fourth, and fifth grade students presented their recorder skills at Recorderama on May 30th! Each grade played a song or two demonstrating what they have learned this year for second graders as the audience, so that second graders know what to expect next year as third graders. Not only has recorder helped students to develop their notation reading and aural skills, but it has also encouraged melodic exploration, proper practicing techniques, and allowed for improvisational opportunities. Fifth grade students ended the event with an arrangement of “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” which consisted of multiple recorder parts, boomwhackers, and ukuleles. The whole program was a lot of fun!
Most recently, we had our Spring concert! Congratulations to all musicians involved in ensembles this year! Fourth and fifth grade band, fourth and fifth grade orchestra, second and third grade choir, and fourth and fifth grade choir all gave a memorable performance at “Spring Earworms.” These groups made such significant progress from the beginning of the year to now, and they should be very proud.
There will be no more choir rehearsals this year, but I look forward to more singing next year!

Physical Education with Mrs. Bartlett & Mrs. Fitzgerald
What a month this has been! We have had a lot of fun and special activities going on in PE. We rolled out a new unit of miniature golf, we explored our new rock wall, and prepared for an awesome field day!
Our mini golf unit was a huge success and the kids had a blast! All grade levels started with an introduction to putting and how to properly hold the golf club. After we had practiced the skill of putting students grades 3-5 worked in small groups to create a miniature golf hole using PE equipment to create obstacles. Students in grade 5, created a more detailed hole including par and noting revisions they made along the way! The students would play their own hole and then had the opportunity to play the holes made by their classmates. Students in grades 2, also had the opportunity to create their own holes, while our kindergarten and first grade students played the holes that were created by the older students. The students were so creative with their designs.
A huge shout out to Ocean State Job Lot for donating the greens to help our mini golf courses come to fruition!
Next up was Field Day! We spent a few classes reviewing some of the activities that the students would participate in during field day. These activities include: some relays, ladder ball, corn hole, and large group games for our older students. The students did an amazing job and helped make field day a success!
We hope you have a safe, happy, and active summer! See you in September!

Spanish with Sra. Navas, Sra. Olafsson, & Sra. Bogdanovic
¡Feliz junio!
Kindergarten: Kindergarteners have been learning about families and how all families are all unique, special and different. Students have been sharing what their families are like: who is in their family and saying if they are big, medium or small. We are so impressed by all of the wonderful Spanish learning that our youngest students have accomplished and are looking forward to continued success in first grade next year!
First grade: To wrap up the year we read the book Buenas Noches Gorila, connecting to the first grade field trip to the zoo. Students loved hearing this story in Spanish which to many is a book they are familiar with. Since reading the book we have been describing the animals from the book, by size, color and the parts of the body. After reading the book, we began a mini unit all about the farm during which students have learned all about different farm animals en español.
Second grade: Our last unit was all about the tropical rainforest which tied in perfectly with the science curriculum during which students learned all about habitats. Students practiced the names of the rainforest animals, the weather in the rainforest, saying what their favorite rainforest animal is and why, and they also learned about the Amazon rainforest: the biggest rainforest in the world! One animal in particular students learned about was the coquí which is a small tree frog from Puerto Rico.
Third grade: Due to some curriculum changes and our current third graders not doing the rainforest unit last year in second grade, third grade students also finished up the school year learning about the rainforest!
Fourth grade: Students did a nice job finishing their presentations on famous houses from the Spanish-speaking world. As we wrap up the year, we have begun to talk a little bit about restaurants, types of restaurants, and what students like to eat when they go out.
Fifth grade: Fifth graders finished up the year wrapping up the health unit during which they learned about different healthy activities and practiced discussing how often they do them as well as learned about different foods en español. Important*** Please visit this link to take the survey to select your language option for next year.
