Hello Woolloomooloo Families!
As winter rolls around the corner, I wanted to remind families that letters of recommendation do take time and both myself, Ms. Beliveau and Mr. Turchetta are inodiated with multiple applications to complete. Our deadlines differ from parent/student applications, so please be patient as we will complete them to our best of our ability.
Thinking ahead...Community Project is in full swing and wanted to give folks a heads up! Please be sure to talk to your scholar about what they may be interested in doing for their project. Mr. Selph - History
This week in I&S saw us take on the difficult task of breaking down our government to make our system make sense. We started the week with wrapping up our time in the set-up of the Constitution through the Constitutional Convention and how the Founders compromised to make our government today. We then ended the week with a look at the branches of government, doing a Station Walk of the legislative branch with a deep-dive into Article 1 and the powers and structure of Congress and a discussion of the executive branch/presidency. The middle of our week was spent on an amazing field trip to the Spy Museum in downtown DC, where students learned about how espionage and spying have affected events in U.S. history like the Civil War and American Revolution. I am eternally grateful to Team Woolloomooloo’s teachers for their help in putting this together and the individuals who were able to chaperone for our kiddos:
- Ms. Jessica Jones
- Mr. Simon Messing
- Mr. David Ryan
- Ms. Ericka Salter
Next week, we will wrap-up our time deep diving into the U.S. Constitution’s Articles and set-up of government with a look at the judicial branch and court system, how to interpret the Constitution in a strict or loose way and what the Bill of Rights allows us to do as Americans!
IMPORTANT ASSIGNMENTS FROM THIS WEEK
- ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION: Handout given to students to help them understand the U.S.’s first attempt at government, the Articles of Confederation. Paper was given out Friday, 12/6 and Mr. Selph wants to give students grades in Aspen to reflect work done. He will grab this early next week! 😊
- CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION: PARTS 1 & 2 – Work we did on the Great Compromise that made our legislative branch and an overview of the Constitutional Convention. Work done in class 12/9 and 12/10 before our field trip, Mr. Selph will check for completion before winter break!
- GETTING TO KNOW YOUR LEGISLATIVE BRANCH! - Station Walk activity Mr. Selph will check next week for completion using Stations about Legislative Branch under Article 1 of U.S. Constitution; worked on in class Thursday 12/12.
Ms. Mbanwie - Science
Next week, students will be able to identify parts of a chemical reaction, balance chemical equations, identify the factors that affect the rate of a chemical reaction and explain how atoms rearrange during a chemical reaction.
Homework will be available on canvas.
Mr. Turchetta - English/Language Arts
Hello everyone!
This week, we put all the students have been working on with informative writing and completed a formative demonstrating their understanding. The assignment is on Canvas called: Formative: TDOSS and RIASCNASO Essay. It was due on Friday, December 13th.
Next week, we will be reflecting on the formative and then completing a summative where students will read an article and explain how the authors portray different ideas in the article.
We will begin reading 145th Street the week of 12/16. It would be great if you could so the student can have their own copy for in book annotations and assignments for homework. If you are able to buy more than one copy, we'd appreciate to have extra copies for other students.***
Have a great weekend!
