Principal's Corner
Hello Families, Caregivers, and Students,
Fall and a season of thankfulness have officially begun and the first quarter of the school year has ended. Grades have been posted and finalized! Caregivers can review their student's grades by logging into their Parent Portal Portal accounts, clicking to open the menu at the left side of the window, and clicking "Grades." You will also need to switch the grade card view to "Q1" to see the first quarter grades. If you have any difficulty with this or with logging into your Parent Portal account please contact our Family Ambassador, Sarah Bowman (her contact information is at the bottom of this newsletter).
I would also like to take a moment to thank our families for your patience as Northtowne and Columbus City Schools (CCS) work to navigate the new state law for student data protection that was created by Ohio Senate Bill 29. As you have likely noticed, one of the significant impacts is that we must continue to temporarily pause our use of Class Dojo for school and classroom communications. CCS is actively working with the Class Dojo company to secure a legal agreement that will allow us to again use this communication platform. We will keep you updated as we learn more.
I am excited about several upcoming Northtowne events. Caregiver-teacher conferences will take place mid-month. I hope our families will take advantage of the opportunity meet and discuss student academic progress. We will also have our Fall Music Concert to showcase the efforts of our students in vocal and instrumental music. Looking ahead a little bit further, I am pleased to announce the 3rd annual Family Gingerbread House Night coming in December! It is always great to see our families supporting their students and our school, so I look forward to seeing many of you in the coming weeks!
With Gratitude,
Mr. Taylor

November is National Native American Heritage Month
Each year since 1990 the president has proclaimed November the designated National Native American Heritage Month. Congress chose the month of November because this is generally the end of the traditional harvest season and a time of thanksgiving and celebration for Native Americans.
National Native American Heritage Month celebrates the cultures, traditions and contributions of Native people across American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian and American Samoan communities. This month raises awareness about the vibrant cultures and heritage of Native communities, uplifting the unique traditions and voices of tribes across the nation.
There are over 500 federally recognized Native tribes in the United States, each with its own unique culture and history. A great way to focus your learning experience is to discover the Tribal territory you reside in by entering your zip code in the Native Lands interactive map online. From there, you can learn more about their unique culture and traditions — from traditional Indigenous food that was grown in your region to how they lived.

Behavior Management at Northtowne
Level 1 and Level 2 offences are managed by the teacher where the behavior occurred. Level 3 offences are managed by the office or PEAK. Level 1 and Level 2 offences involve minor insubordination, disrespect, and basic safety concerns. Level 3 Offences involve repeated Level 1 or Level 2 behaviors in a single day, and severe risks to personal safety or the safety of others.
Additional information can also be found in the CCS Guide to Student Success on pages 22-30. To view the guide click here.
If you have questions about behavior management procedures you can contact Principal Taylor (ataylor4@columbus.k12.oh.us), our PEAK teacher Ms Hughes (hhughes2654@columbus.k12.oh.us), or our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) coordinator Ms Lee (alee3@columbus.k12.oh.us).
Canned Food Drive
The Black House of Altruismo is kicking off our 1st House Challenge with a Food Drive! Since Altruismo is the house of GIVERS we thought it would be fun to challenge each house to give to those in need. The challenge is underway now and goes through November 18th. All food will be donated to a local food pantry. In the main hallway by the front office there are four food collection boxes, one for each house. When students bring in donations, we ask that they drop them into the correct house box, the boxes are color coded. If families drop off donations during the school day we ask that you mark the donation with the name of your student's teacher so that the correct house will get credit. We will take a count at the end of each day and put the points up on the board. The House with the most items will earn a dance party!
SHINE - Staff Heros Illustrating Northtowne Excellence
Staff Heros Illustrating Northtowne Excellence (SHINE) is an award for our staff that is similar to the TAG awards. SHINE is new for this school year and recognizes that even adults thrive better when they are recognized for their efforts! While staff are able to nominate each other for these awards, the real magic happens when our families get involved too!!
SHINE is an opportunity for staff, caregivers, and students (with the guidance of their adults at home) to share a moment of greatness that was noticed and appreciated. Did a staff member go above and beyond? Were they especially helpful? Were they responsive to your needs or concerns? Even small actions can make a big difference for the people they impact, let’s share these positive moments and appreciation with each other!
To nominate a staff member, fill out the “SHINE” Google Form with the date, your name, name of the nominee, and reason for the SHINE. A SHINE award certificate will be filled out and delivered to the appropriate staff member for each nomination made in the Google Form. The link for the form is here: https://forms.gle/Zhs76dZ6kgLY16DF6

Right to Know
Parents Right To Know Information as Required by the Elementary and Secondary Education
Act (ESEA) (Section 1112(e)(1)(A) and the Every Student Succeeds Act (Section 1112(e)(1)(A)
As a parent of a student attending a school that is receiving Federal Title I dollars, you have the right
to know the professional qualifications of the teacher(s) and instructional paraprofessional(s) who
instruct your child, Federal law required every Title I school district to comply and to provide you
with the requested information in a timely manner.
We are happy to provide this information to you. At any time, you may ask:
- whether the teacher met state qualifications and certification requirements for the grade level
and subject he/she is teaching
- whether the teacher received an emergency or conditional certificate through which state
- what undergraduate or graduate degrees the teacher holds, including graduate certificates and additional degrees, and major(s) or area(s) of concentration.
You may also ask whether your child receives help from a paraprofessional. If your child receives this assistance, we can provide you with information about the paraprofessional’s qualifications.
The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) which was signed into law in December 2015 and
reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1956 (ESEA) includes additional right to know requests. At any time, parents and family members can request:
- information on policies regarding student participation in assessments and procedures for
opting out, and;
- information on required assessments that include:
- subject matter tested
- purpose of the test
- source of the requirement (if applicable)
- amount of time it takes students to complete the test, and
- time and format of disseminating results
Our staff is committed to helping your child develop the academic knowledge and critical thinking
skills he/she needs to succeed in school and beyond. That commitment includes making sure that all of our teachers and paraprofessionals meet applicable Ohio state requirements.
