SUMMER PROGRAMS/OPPORTUNITIES
Tips to Avoid the Summer Slide
As we approach the end of the school year, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering support and partnership throughout this academic journey. Together, we have navigated challenges and celebrated successes, and now it’s time for a well-deserved break.
While summer is a fantastic opportunity for rest and rejuvenation, keeping our children’s minds engaged is important to prevent the “summer slide.” The summer slide refers to the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the school year. To help your children retain their skills and continue learning over the summer, we have compiled some simple and effective tips:
Set aside time each day for your child to read books of their choice. Visit the local library or explore digital reading platforms.
Read together as a family and discuss the stories to enhance comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Engage your child in educational games and activities that promote math, science, and language skills. Websites and apps like Khan Academy, PBS Kids, iReady, BrainPop, and epic! offer fun and interactive learning experiences.
Cooking, gardening, and planning trips can also provide hands-on learning opportunities in math, science, and geography.
Encourage your child to keep a summer journal, write letters to family members, or create their own stories.
Take advantage of museums, zoos, and cultural events in your community.
Incorporate math into daily activities, such as measuring ingredients for recipes, calculating travel distances, or budgeting for a family outing.
Use math workbooks, card games, or online resources to practice basic skills regularly. Here is a great site with some fun game ideas: https://www.weareteachers.com/math-card-games/
We hope these tips will help your child stay engaged and ready to start the new school year with confidence. Thank you once again for your continued support. Have a safe, enjoyable, and enriching summer!
