Little Lancer Lowdown
“Where Learners are Grown with Pride!”
May 2024
Dear Little Elba Lancer Families,
As you will see from the upcoming events at the bottom of the newsletter, we have a busy schedule ahead, including field trips, special events, and end-of-year celebrations. Be on the lookout for specific information from your child's teacher(s) about upcoming field trips.
Next week, May 7th and 8th, students in grades 3-8 will be taking the NYS Math Computer-Based Test to showcase their knowledge of mathematical skills. On May 14th, our 5th grade students will be taking the new NYS Grade 5 Science Assessment. This assessment was given previously in fourth grade. We know that our students are very prepared for both the mathematics and science assessments.
On another note, I'm thrilled to share about our #ClassroomBookaDay challenge that continues on a daily occurence. I am working to continue to promote the joy of reading among our students and foster a love for literature. Each day, one class/homeroom engages in reading a new book with me, sparking amazing discussions. The interactions during these reading sessions have been incredibly valuable, one in which I simply love engaging in. Over the past few months we have read really amazing books! On that topic, I highly encourage you to continue this momentum at home by reading with your child regularly and/or encouraging your child to find an author, subject, or book that they love. Reading outside of school is extremely valuable. Engaging in independent reading not only improves literacy skills such as vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency but also enhances critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. Reading for pleasure fosters a sense of empathy and emotional intelligence, as readers often relate to characters' experiences and perspectives, thereby expanding their understanding of the world around them. If you are unsure how to support your child's reading at home, please reach out to Miss Hirsch, our librarian, their classroom teacher, or myself. We would be happy to recommend books! Your involvement in their reading journey plays a vital role in nurturing their academic success and lifelong love for learning.
As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns!
With Lancer Pride,
~Mrs. Jessica Cramer
Star Lab
Our students were very lucky to experience the Star Lab in April. The StarLab is a portable, inflatable planetarium that was set up in the auditorium. Miss Kreutter provided a lesson to students which included what the solar eclipse looked like from Earth and from space! Thank you Miss Kreutter for an engaging opportunity!
Food Drive
Congratulations to Mrs. Hoisington's UPK class for collecting the most food for the Elba Food Pantry. 860 items were collected! Thank you for participating in the food drive!
