Updates from Mr. Dettwiller
June 29, 2022
We hope everyone is having an enjoyable summer and enjoying some time with family and friends. We wanted to send out some early updates for next year as well as show off some of the great things our students and staff completed at the end of the year. If you have any questions or just want to reach out please do so.

Some Changes to Watch for in the 22-23 School Year
School Lunch Changes
Breakfast will still be free though for all students.
One big key for us as a district is everyone filling out the free and reduced lunch forms. These are critical for our funding mechanisms through the state. Even if you don't think you will qualify it is critical we get one these filled out for every student. Having these forms can have a huge impact on our State funding.

At the High School, we have a new Math teacher, Ms. Christine Painter. A new Music Teacher and Band Director, Mr. Hayden Fry. We have a new Vo Ag teacher, Ms. Kendra Risner. Mr. Bill Salyer is also moving into one of our High School Social Studies roles coming over from 7th and 8th grade.
We also have an alum coming back on the team, Mr. Garret Hall who is the new Assistant Principal and Athletic Director.
We are so excited to welcome these new team members to our family and even more excited to see the impact they will have on our students.
New Career Coach Hope Kiger is also our New Varsity Volleyball Coach
We will have a new position next year in a Career Coach at the high school. Hope Kiger will be helping our students from the 7th and 8th grade level up to our seniors explore different career options, she will help them with internships, career fairs, and helping Mr. Bush and Mrs. Roush engage with our students to help them plan for the steps they need to take to be successful after high school. She will be on campus most days and working to build relationships with local businesses.
We are also excited to have her as our new volleyball coach.
Here is a message from Mrs. Kiger:
My name is Hope Kiger. My family and I just moved to the Gallipolis area. Earlier this year my husband and I celebrated our 25th anniversary. I have 3 children and recently became a grandma this past December. My family and I love to go camping and kayaking. My biggest love other than family is and has always been volleyball. I played beginning in Jr. High through high school and moved on to play at Penn State University. I was lucky to continue with my passion for volleyball by coaching the Jr. Varsity girls volleyball at Utica High school and at Ohio Christian University. I have also been lucky to have coached soccer, softball and cheerleading. I have a big love for sports, but volleyball has always been my passion.Any girls interested in playing volleyball this year, should be on the lookout for an all call in the next week or two about open gyms and workouts this summer.

6TH GRADE STUDENTS LEAVE IT BETTER THAN THEY FOUND IT
Mrs. Martin's 6th Grade ELA Class worked hard on a service learning project at the end of the school year. For this project, the students came up with a plan to make improvements to the gazebo out on the playground in order to leave the playground "better than they found it." This is a space many students go to read, draw, and socialize during recess. For their project, the students reached out to their community for donations with big plans of planting flowers around the gazebo, creating a stepping stone path to the gazebo for easy access, even on rainy days, and to build a little library that could safely house books outside on the playground year round. Yesterday, the final touches were added to the little library! The class successfully met each of these goals and intends to help keep up with it as they move through their time at Eastern.
We would like to say a big thank you to Baum's Lumber, Darrell Norris Greenhouses, The Barnett Family, Bill Salyer, Connie Osbourne, Judy Lee, and Bill Johnson for their donations of materials, time, and wisdom! We could not have done it without all of your help!

EASTERN LEADERSHIP ADVOCATES FOR STUDENTS OF THE REGION
Eastern leadership was recently a part of a group community effort at the Blakeslee Center in Middleport for the Meigs County community roundtable on March 21, the second in a series of such conversations the Coalition will conduct across the region. The Coalition was pleased to welcome over 25 key stakeholders to engage in a conversation around the challenges, successes, and needs for youth and those supporting them in the area of behavioral and mental health care. Randy Leite, executive director, facilitated the conversation and highlighted how ACC plans to work with supporting agencies and partners with increased workforce development, school-based health programs, crisis care, and other vital areas.
On March 30, the Appalachian Children Coalition hosted its Appalachian Child Investment Brunch at the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. With support from Sunday Creek Horizons, 80 state representatives, state senators, legislative staff, and regional stakeholders were able to learn about shovel-ready projects primed for investment. The coalition has recommended an investment of $30 million of American Rescue Plan funds with partnerships and detailed project plans already in place.
The event included a briefing session featuring regional leaders who explained the unique disparities they see daily in their professional roles that threaten the wellbeing of the Appalachian child. The panel included Tina Husted, Robin Burrow, Tom Davis, Steve Evans, Stephanie Starcher, Misty Cromwell, Jenny Stotts, Lisa Ward, Sam Schaffer, and Marsha Lewis. Panelists spoke on personal and professional experiences in areas addressing school based health services, crisis stabilization in the region, the growing need for workforce development, and current efforts to provide more comprehensive research and data to support state decision making. These individuals represented the issues that impact all of Appalachian Ohio’s schools, foster care services, CASA/GAL programs, and regional behavioral health offerings.
