Southview Elementary
October 2024 Newsletter
Greetings from the Principal
Greetings Southview Families!
As we soar through the school year, we’re embracing the theme “What if you fly?”—a reminder that anything is possible when we believe in ourselves and take the leap. This year, we’ve focused on building a safe and welcoming environment where every student feels supported to take risks, try new things, and even stumble along the way—because that’s how we learn to spread our wings and fly.
Our dedicated teachers have been hard at work, not only teaching lessons but also building strong relationships with your children. We understand that each child’s journey is unique, and our goal is to meet them where they are, helping them grow in both their academic and social-emotional learning.
We’ve been teaching clear expectations for all areas of the school, focusing on building a community where everyone feels respected and valued. When students know they are supported, they are more willing to step out of their comfort zones, ask questions, and try again if they don’t succeed the first time. This is the essence of “What if you fly?”—knowing that sometimes we need to leap, even if we’re afraid we might fall.
Being here every day, on time, sets the tone for their learning and helps them stay engaged and connected. We will be using ENGAGE Wisconsin again this year, to support students and families in need. This program provides an extra layer of support, including an Academic Success Coach to help students stay on track and reach their goals.
Teachers will be sharing information on how you can support your child’s growth in reading and self-regulation at home in November during Parent Teacher Conferences. Your involvement and partnership with us make a significant impact on your child’s success. Whether it’s helping with homework, attending conferences, or volunteering your time, together we can guide our children as they navigate their educational journey.
Thank you for entrusting us with your child’s education and for being a part of our school community. With your support, our students are not just learning—they are thriving, taking risks, and discovering what’s possible when they dare to fly.
Let’s continue to work together to make this school year an adventure filled with growth, learning, and new possibilities.
Respectfully,
Janet E. Goodman
Southview Elementary Principal
School Calendar Update
School Calendar Update- Elementary Students Only
Kindergarten through 5th grade students will NOT have school on Thursday, October 24th.
This change has been made to provide the time necessary for Elementary Level teachers to complete training necessary for implementing the state mandated Early Literacy Benchmark system beginning this January. The Wisconsin Department of Education made districts aware on July 15 of the mandated system, after our 2024-25 calendar had been set. Professional Development dates that were already set have been committed to other required training that we are not able to change.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.

From the office
If your child is going to be absent or tardy for any reason, please call the office by 8:30 a.m. School starts at 7:43 am. Any student who arrives after 7:43 am is considered tardy.
Anytime a child changes their way home, a note must be sent. Parents need to have a plan in place for their child after school. Phone calls are discouraged but if a change needs to be called in, PLEASE call the office by 1:00 to insure that the message gets delivered to the classroom.
VERY IMPORTANT: If there is a change for that day, please do not contact the teacher. Teachers are busy in the classroom and not always able to check their devices. There could also be a sub in the classroom so please call the office to insure that your child gets the message.
If your child's transportation after school changes daily or isn't consistent, please provide a calendar for the teacher and the office. This eliminates any questions on where a child goes on a daily basis.
FEES: If you've gotten some notices about unpaid fees, you can pay your child's fees online through the Parent Portal or you can send payment with your child to school.
Kindergarten fees $4
1st grade fees $13.00

3rd grade fees $5.00
4th grade fees $9.25

ONLINE REGISTRATION: Please make sure that you fill out the required annual OnLine Registration for your child. Once you log into your parent portal, go to Online Registration in the lower left hand corner. You can update your family information and complete several permissions for each child. You must "submit" your online registration for it to be complete. If you have any further questions or need further help, please feel free to contact our districts help desk at 715-726-2413. If you don't have access to a computer, the front office is equipped with one for you to use.
This is required annually. The district doesn't have permission to take students on fieldtrips if this isn't completed.
BUS TRANSPORTATION
All student rerouting requests will originate at Chippewa Yellow Bus Company. 715-726-2454. Student rerouting requests require a 24-hour notice and approval by the bus company. This includes one time and/ or occasional rerouting requests.

Please click HERE to go to the district's school bus transportation page.
Please see a list of daycare's that partner with the Chippewa Falls School District.
Outdoor Apparel Guidelines
As we enjoy our Fall, we want to let parents know about the guidelines we follow around temperatures and outdoor apparel. We ask that our students wear long sleeves and pants when the temperature is below 50 degrees. This may mean students wear pants over shorts or under a dress or skirt in the morning and can wear shorts or dress or skirt when they go out to recess later in the day and the temperature is 50 or above.
Also, during the colder months, some students still prefer to wear shorts to PE. This is something that is acceptable. However, we ask that students wear pants over their shorts before and after PE. When the snow flies, we encourage all students to wear winter coats, gloves/mittens, hats, boots and snow pants so they are staying warm and dry while playing outside. Further, that outdoor gear protects the clothes underneath so when our students are back in the building they are able to be focused on their learning and not on their damp pants, socks, etc.
If your child is in need of colder weather apparel or footwear, please reach out to your child's teacher so we work together to meet that need.

Southview Directory
Each year our PTO puts together a directory for families to voluntarily complete that is shared with all families to use for setting up playdates, sending party invites, etc. We encourage families who are wanting their information to be shared to complete the online directory form below.
The directory will be shared with families a few times a year via Infinite Campus Messenger and Classroom DOJO.
Weather Changes
As we begin to enjoy our Fall, I wanted to send out a reminder about the guidelines we follow around temperatures and outdoor apparel.
We ask that our students wear 2 layers on top and pants when the temperature is below 50 degrees.
Thank you for your help as we make the transition into colder days ahead. Should any concerns arise at school, we will reach out. Take care and be well.

Health Services Registration Letter
*Immunization Reminder*
State Law requires that all immunizations be up-to-date within 30 days of entering the school system. New students will be asked to complete the immunization card at registration, all others are requested to notify the school nurse when your child receives additional immunizations. Waivers for personal, religious, or health reasons remain an option for parents.
Immunization Requirements 24/25
From Health Services:
Here are some important guidelines to consider when you hear those words, “I feel sick; I don’t want to go to school today.” These guidelines are the standards of practice the CFAUSD School Nurses follow for the comfort and safety of all of our students and staff.
Keep your student home if any of the following apply:
Temperature over 100.4 degrees in the last 24 hours. If you suspect that they may be sick, please check their temperature with a thermometer before sending them to school. If they have a fever it is not appropriate to send them to school, even if you give them acetaminophen or ibuprofen and their fever breaks. Your child will still be contagious to other children and will also not be feeling well enough to learn. Coming to school sick (and possibly contagious) not only exposes other children to the illness, but also delays your child’s healing time. Once the medicine wears off and the fever returns, your child must be picked up anyway, and valuable healing time has been lost. Children must be fever-free for 24 hours, without the use of medicine, before returning to school.
Vomiting or diarrhea in the last 24 hours - If the vomiting or diarrhea happen more than once that day, or if they are associated with fever, you must keep your child home. Even if these things happen only one time before school starts and your child feels better immediately afterwards, it is still wise to watch for a few hours to see if it happens again before sending them on to class. If your child is spending all of their time at school feeling sick, then not much learning is taking place!
An unexplained rash - Anytime a rash is associated with fever, the child may not come to school until that fever is gone for 24 hours without medication. Sometimes a rash is a sign of a contagious disease such as chickenpox. Sometimes rashes are not contagious, but are uncomfortable and itchy from contact with something the child is allergic to.
It is recommended that your student stays home if the following apply:
- Headache, cough, sore throat, or congestion severe enough to interfere with attention to school work.
- Flare ups from asthma that would make it difficult to work in school.
DOCTOR NOTES FOR LIMITATIONS/RESTRICTIONS IN SCHOOL:
If your child has an injury or a health issue that requires limitations or restrictions while in school, the district requires a note from the doctor with the restrictions. If the note does not have a date when normal activities can be restarted, a note will also be required to allow the student to again participate in activities.
Treats in the Classroom:
The health office requests that any treats brought in to school for birthdays, parties, or any other special occasions should be store bought with a clear nutrition label. There are certain students and staff with health conditions that may require dietary accommodations and it's important that they are able to review a food's nutrition label before choosing to omit or consume certain foods.
Please also be mindful about choosing treats that may contain tree nuts and/or peanuts for your student's classroom. There may be other students in your child's classroom who may have a severe nut allergy. If you are wondering whether your child is in a nut free classroom, please inquire with your student's classroom teacher or the health office.

Safety Patrol
Walkers: Please remind children to refrain from crossing streets at points other than at the designated crossings. The safety patrol workers are on the corners to aid in the safety of our students so please only cross the streets where the crossing guards are positioned. Students are to conduct themselves in a proper and safe manner at all times.
Bikers: For safety reasons, once on school property, children need to walk their bikes to the bike racks. They are NOT to ride their bikes on the crosswalks.
Volunteer Reminder
If you would like to volunteer to help out in the classroom or go on any field trips, you must fill out the proper online form. Please click HERE to be taken to our Volunteer Information webpage. Please note that once the online form is submitted, it could take up to 2 weeks to fully process so please allow ample time before you volunteer for the first time. The link is always open so feel free to fill it out at your earliest convenience. If you will be volunteering in a classroom or chaperoning on a field trip, please make child care arrangements for your younger children. When you are volunteering, you will be responsible for supervising specific students and we need your attention directed to those students at all times. This means that we are NOT able to allow for siblings to attend school sponsored field trips. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
The district adopted a new volunteer management system last spring so many parents are already on file and approved to volunteer for the 2024-25 school year. That approval is good for 1 year so for those parents that are already in the new system, you will get an email 30 days prior to its expiration date, reminding you to reapply. The email will come from RAPTOR TECHNOLOGIES and will go to the email address that they have on file for you.
Southview Elementary Halloween Celebration
On Thursday, October 31st, we will be having classroom parties to include costumes and themed activities.
Costumes should be safe, non-offensive, and non-violent. NO weapons or look-alike weapons will be allowed.
Teachers will not be assisting with face make-up for students.
An alternate activity is planned for those who do not want to participate in Halloween activities. Please let your child’s teacher know if you do not want your child to participate.
If you need help getting a costume for your child, please contact the office.
Watch for more information from your child’s teacher regarding specifics for your child’s classroom. Thank you!

On-Site Chiropractic Care
The 2024-25 school year is off to a great start and On-Site Chiropractic is excited to be part of so many kids’ school days. It’s been fun getting to see our returning students and hear about their summers, and we look forward to getting to know this year's new students that have started chiropractic care.
Fall brings the changing of the seasons and cooler weather. Sometimes it also brings on seasonal allergies. The sneezing, stuffy nose and congestion are all uncomfortable but did you know that chiropractic can help with those symptoms? An adjustment can ease congestion & relieve sinus pressure. Chiropractic care also helps strengthen the immune system by correcting misalignments in the spine, especially the neck. It allows the spinal nerves and brain to communicate better, meaning the body has a better chance against allergens.
Enjoy the beautiful Fall weather and if you are interested in your child receiving chiropractic care at school, please contact onsitechiroinfo@gmail.com for more information.
Annual Notice of Special Education Referral and Evaluation Procedures
Upon request, the Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District is required to evaluate a child for eligibility for special education services. A request for evaluation is known as a referral. When the district receives a referral, the district will appoint an Individualized Education Program (IEP) team to determine if the child has a disability, and if the child needs special education services. The district locates, identifies, and evaluates all children with disabilities who are enrolled by their parents in private (including religious) schools, elementary schools and secondary schools located in the school district.
A physician, nurse, psychologist, social worker, or administrator of a social agency who reasonably believes a child brought to him or her for services is a child with a disability has a legal duty to refer the child, including a homeless child, to the school district in which the child resides. Before referring the child, the person making the referral must inform the child's parent that the referral will be made.
Others, including parents, who reasonably believe a child is a child with a disability may also refer the child, including a homeless child, to the school district in which the child resides.
Referrals must be in writing and include the reason why the person believes the child is a child with a disability. Please contact the following when you have a referral:
