GMS WEEKLY NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 1, 2023
Good Afternoon Wolf Pack Families,
We have so many great things happening at Geisler Middle School! This week, our Reflections Contest winners for our school were announced and they will be moving on to District level judging. Wishing all of our finalists good luck. On December 4, a new Technology Club will begin for girls only. This club will be run by some of our former GMS students who currently attend WL Western. They are so excited to share their knowledge and passion of computer technology with our girls. Our nationally recognized newspaper, The Geisler Chronicles, has produced a wonderful edition and I encourage all of our families to read what our amazing students have written! Special thanks to Mr. Yu and Ms. Bacon for sponsoring this club.
Wishing all of our Wolf Pack Community a fantastic weekend!
Sincerely,
Stuart Riley
Principal, Geisler Middle School

Girls Get IT Club
A new club will be launching at Geisler Middle School. GET IT Club is a Girls-Only technology club founded by the Michigan Council of Women in Technology (MCWT), an organization with the goal of making Michigan the number 1 state for women in STEM. This goal is being achieved through events that expose girls from K-12 to the businesses involved in technology such as Mercedes Benz. The MCWT also hosts competitions that teach girls the basics of cybersecurity and/or website design. You might have seen pictures on the district website from the most recent event the GET IT Summit at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor this year. Walled Lake Northern and Western students attend GET-IT Connection Summit
The club will be run by past Geisler Alumni Daniella Erebor(Co-President) and Brinley Evink(Secretary) and other Walled Lake Western GET IT club officers, Vanessa Nguyen(Vice-President) and Victoria Nguyen(Co-President). Their main officers were Varsity Robotics members for Yetis 7178, so they have experience to help familiarize younger girls with the basics of coding and pair programming. They aim to promote these abilities so that the students can develop communication and programming skills to help them in their future careers. The main platforms that would be used are Snap!, Code.org, and Replit which all the officers used during their Intro To Programming and AP Computer Science Principles courses taught by Mr. Klassa at Walled Lake Western.
This is a great extracurricular that girls can join to learn about their interests and continue throughout high school. During their senior year of high school, they will be able to apply for MCWT Scholarships which range from $1,000 to 5,000.
So, please spread the word to your daughters. The GET IT club will meet once a month at Geisler Middle School. Their first meeting will be Monday, December 4th from 3:10 pm - 4:10 pm in Ms. Frost’s room (121). Adult supervision will be provided at all meetings. Snacks and Drinks will be provided. Students must have reliable transportation arrangements to pick them up at 4:10 pm.
The only thing your daughters will need to bring is either a Chromebook or a computer/laptop.

WLCSD is currently planning our Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration and need your help. This year’s theme is “You belong” with the focus on inclusivity. The keynote speaker is Kevin Szawala, aka “Mr. Peace”. Geisler MS will soon begin working on our school exhibit that will be showcased at Walled Lake Northern High School at the annual celebration on Monday, January 15th.
Please see the District communication links below for more information on the event and a nomination form for a "Friend of Diversity." Individual students may enter individual projects to celebrate the day as well.

Weekend Food Program-Hospitality House
Supporting and caring for our students in any way possible is our mission at GMS. Geisler MS recently partnered with Hospitality House Food Pantry in Walled Lake to bring the Weekend Food Program to our students. If you are a family that could use a little extra help with meals on the weekends, please let your child’s counselor know. Your child’s name will be held confidential. The Weekend Food Program would provide approximately 6 meals and snacks for your student on the weekend. The food would be distributed to your student in a discreet bag or backpack for them to take home each Friday. There is no cost to participate in the program. To optimize a student’s success at school starts with students having enough to eat. Please see the attached flyer for more information about the Weekend Food Program. If you are interested in having your student participate, please contact your student’s counselor Ann Marie Rutherford (Counselor for 6th Grade Students (A-L) and ALL 8th Grade Students) annmarierutherford@wlcsd.org or 248-956-2917 or Amanda Hart (6th Grade Students (M-Z) and ALL 7th Grade Students) amandahart@wlcsd.org or 248-956-2916.
