Autism Awareness: Embracing Neurodiversity in Our School
April is Autism Awareness Month, a time to celebrate the strengths and talents of individuals on the autism spectrum while promoting understanding and acceptance. Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how people communicate, interact, and experience the world around them.
In the Moses Lake School District, we believe in fostering an inclusive environment where all students feel valued and supported. Here are some ways we can show our support:
- Learn & Listen – Take time to understand autism by listening to the experiences of autistic individuals.
- Be Kind & Patient – Everyone processes information differently. A little patience and kindness go a long way.
- Celebrate Differences – Neurodiversity makes our community stronger! Embrace the unique perspectives and talents of every student.
Let’s work together to make our school a place where everyone feels seen, heard, and accepted. 💙
Transition Celebration
We had another great turnout at our annual Transition Celebration event this year. Jodi Truman and her team invited tons of local resources around the area for our students and their families to explore and get information from to access now and/or post high school. If you missed the event, but are interested in some of these resources, reach out to Jodi (jtruman@mlsd161.org). Check out the picture of all of our vendors who attended the event.
Special Services Superheroes!
Is there someone who has helped in your child’s education, going above and beyond to see your child for who they really are? Has someone gone the extra mile to include your child and brighten their day?
You and your child can nominate them for the monthly Special Services Superhero! Fill out this NOMINATION FORM and a Superhero will be featured in our next newsletter.
A Movie Night to Remember
This past month, the SEPAC (Special Education Parent Advisory Council) and the Special Services Department hosted a free movie night for families and students across the district. Not only did everyone have a good time enjoying some popcorn and fun movie, we also were able to engage with some of our families and provide additional information about what SEPAC is and how to get involved. We look forward to hosting more nights like these next year.
As a reminder, the mission of the Moses Lake School District SEPAC is to facilitate collaboration between students, parents, staff, the Board of Education, and the community at large. The SEPAC will promote training and resources, inclusive practices, understanding of, respect for, and support of all children with special needs in our community. If you want more information, please feel free to reach out to sepac@mlsd161.org.
