Principal's Message 10.22.21
Dear Lake Grove Families,
We had our first ever, very short, outdoor assembly at Lake Grove on Wednesday! Students gathered to learn about Cougar Compliments (tickets they can earn for being caught doing the right thing) and sing our school song all together. We are making memories as a community again and finding ways to create joy.
Be well,
Principal Knapp
Red Ribbon Week - Oct 25-27
This year’s National Red Ribbon Week theme is:
Drug Free Looks Like Me™
Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness program. Red Ribbon Week is a drug prevention campaign that started in 1985 to honor the courageous work of DEA agent Enrique Camarena. People began wearing red ribbons to support and pledge to lead drug free lives in honor of the sacrifices that Enrique made for our country.
Red Ribbon Week is a national initiative to increase drug awareness and prevention among school children. By participating in Red Ribbon Week, students are encouraged to speak out in support of healthy choices. This year’s theme is a reminder that by staying drug free, you are sending a message to yourself and others about how much you value yourself, your overall health, your community and your future.
The Lake Grove School community is encouraged to honor Red Ribbon Week
by participating in the following Spirit Day activities:
Monday, October 25: “Creative Connections”
Lake Grove students will participate in a school-wide art project. Grovers can get creative and share the message of saying no to drugs in a fun way.
Tuesday, October 26: “I'm RED-y to Say No to Drugs!”
See how much RED you can wear from head to shoe to show you’re proud to be DRUG-FREE!
Wednesday, October 27: “Hocus Pocus! Healthy Choices are our focus!”
Wear a school appropriate Halloween costume (No weapons or blood & no face coverings other than your CDC approved mask.)
Conference Format Details
This year, parents-guardians have the opportunity to choose a virtual Zoom conference or an in-person conference.
If you choose an in-person conference please note that people inside school buildings are required to follow current state guidance, including:
Wear a properly fitted mask over your face and nose while indoors.
Maintain 6 or more feet of distance from other adults; except household partners may be within 6 feet of each other.
Visitors are not allowed in schools while children are present. We are able to have in-person conferences for adults only.
Please note that in a few pre-arranged circumstances a child may attend their own conference, but we need to limit siblings attending to decrease the possibility of exposure, particularly with the possibility of unvaccinated individuals in the building. You will be notified directly if your child's teacher is planning for student-led conferences.
If you are unable to follow these guidelines, we ask that you sign up for a virtual conference instead.
Teachers are prepared to offer a quality conference experience no matter the format, and they are looking forward to talking with you about your child’s progress.
SEL Theme for October: Empathy
Dear Lake Grove Families,
This month, we are talking about the social-emotional skill of EMPATHY. During our SEL time, we will be referencing the following definition:
EMPATHY: the ability to understand and connect to the feelings of another.
EMPATHY is a crucial skill for being in a community with others and a powerful skill to develop in personal and professional relationships. We are focusing on a few key components of EMPATHY: knowing how we feel (and having the language to describe those feelings), understanding what others are feeling, and listening to others well so we can connect in more meaningful ways.
We will reflect on powerful images which will inspire conversations about emotions, connection, and friendship. We will learn about incredible people and what they have to say about EMPATHY. Most importantly, we will celebrate what makes us different and learn about the amazing things that bring us together.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I can be reached at postw@loswego.k12.or.us or 503-534-2357. For your reference, here are links for extension activities you may wish to explore further as a family:

Lock Down Drill Instruction
During the week of November 1st, our teachers will be explaining the process of what we would do in an emergency Lock Down, but we will not be practicing the procedures. For our Kindergarten through Third grade students teachers will use this Lock Down Story Book to guide discussions and in 4th and 5th grade students will watch and discuss this video.
A lockdown means there is a possible threat inside the school. This is not business as usual. Hallways are cleared, all classroom doors are locked, and lights are turned out. Students and staff are instructed to stay quiet and out of sight during a lockdown.
We follow the Standard Response Protocol @ https://iloveuguys.org/The-Standard-Response-Protocol.html
We thank you for your help and cooperation, as we work to provide safe learning environments for all students in the Lake Oswego School District.

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
Userway is Lake Oswego School District’s primary accessibility tool. You can add this tool to your own computer at WCAG 2.1 AA Website Accessibility - Accessible Websites with UserWay | UserWay. Userway does not store information on users and is COPPA, FERPA, HIPAA, GDPR and ADA compliant.
Assistive Technology … Did you know?
Technology is changing and improving the school experience for students with dyslexia. Text-to-speech and speech-to-text software, calculators, and note-taking apps are common examples of “assistive technology”. Many of us enjoy audiobooks for pleasure reading, but audiobooks also can serve as a vital piece of assistive technology for those with learning differences such as dyslexia.
With audiobooks everyone can acquire new vocabulary, expand their knowledge and love of books, and enjoy complex or intriguing storylines. Because dyslexics have great listening comprehension, audiobooks enable independent access to school curriculum through “ear-reading” of complex or voluminous textbooks and novels.
The Lake Oswego Public Library has many audiobook services here:
LOSD assistive technology and audiobook resource information can be found here:
LOSD Audiobooks & Read-Aloud Tools
If you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s learning, please contact the school principal and/or literacy specialist. Another great parent resource would be to contact your school’s Student Services Parent Advisory Committee (SSPAC) representative. Please see here to learn how to contact your school representative.
