Math Newsletter
Our goal is provide engaging and meaningful learning opportunities and resources to support mathematical growth for Arizona educators.
Welcome Back!
We hope that you made time to decompress, relax, have some fun and truly take a break.
This coming school year may feel more “normal” than the last few, but we hope that it is not business as usual. Lots of learning occurred, new skills were acquired, and we hope to see that great work continue in math classrooms across Arizona.
Part of that work is to continue the conversation with families and communities, that there is no “new math,” it just looks and sounds different. Math is still math. We want to see students engaging with math in meaningful and authentic ways. We want to see them sense making. We want to see the multiple representation. We want to hear the conversations and debates around conjectures. We want to see kids working together to problem solve and make connections across different thinking paths and solution strategies. We want to see and hear them engaging with the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice.
Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All, digs into the 8 Mathematical Teaching Practices that provide the framework for strengthening the teaching and learning of mathematics. We hope that you will join us- for all or some of the sessions scheduled- as we not only dig into this transformative text, but also engage in mathematical content together, discuss our beliefs, engage in powerful discussions with guest speakers, and push math education forward.
If you are looking to improve your classroom practice or build a community of practice or expand your network, then join us as we kick off the first session on Tuesday, August 23rd from 4 -5:30 pm. See full details in the newsletter below.
As always, please reach out if you need anything. We are here to support you.
Cheers to a wonderful school year!
Take care,
Eboney

Professional Learning Series
Coming for the 2022-2023 School Year!
Principles to Actions - PD Series and Book Study
Join the ADE Math Team as we embark on a statewide journey into the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) publication of Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All. This will be a combination of different learning experiences; we will incorporate elements of a book study, professional learning, panels and office hours to best support educators in their learning.
Principles to Actions - Executive Summary
We will unpack the reading from Principles to Actions over 12 professional learning sessions. This will be coupled with 10 office hour sessions where educators can drop in and talk about how they are putting learning for Principles to Actions into practice, ask questions, share struggles and celebrate wins.
The first three scheduled meetings are:
Tuesday, August 23rd - Session 1: Overview of Principles to Actions
Tuesday, September 6th - Session 2: Math Teaching Practice #1 - Establish Math Goals to Focus Learning
Tuesday, September 20th - Session 3: Mathematical Teaching Practice #2, Implement Tasks that Promote Reasoning and Problem Solving

Graham Fletcher is Coming to Arizona!
ADE will be hosting a visit from Graham Fletcher for a special professional development opportunity for educators.
Graham Fletcher has served in education as a classroom teacher, math instructional lead, and currently as a math specialist. He is continually seeking new and innovative ways to support students and teachers in their development of conceptual understanding in elementary mathematics. He is the coauthor of Building Fact Fluency and openly shares many of his resources at gfletchy.com.

The Power of Progressions: Untangling the Knotty Areas of Teaching and Learning Mathematics
-
As more teachers look to add high-yield tasks to their repertoire, the struggle to make it all work becomes real. Let's examine how problem-based lessons can be used throughout the scope of a unit and how we can harness their power to move student thinking forward. We'll identify strategies and explore some tasks that help us find a healthy balance between application, conceptual understanding, and procedural fluency.
The Power of Progressions: Untangling the Knotty Areas of Teaching and Learning Fractions
- Let’s explore some key understandings involving fractions by examining the developmental progression of models, strategies, and concepts and how they all build on one another. Many times, as our fraction units near, the emphasis on teaching and learning mathematics shifts to rules and procedures, which shouldn't be the case. To avoid this approach, we'll identify how simple changes in everyday practice can leave a math residue that builds solid reasoning and makes student understanding stick.

- 100 N 15th Avenue Phoenix, AZ 85007 - ADOA Building (This is the ADE North Building)
- This is an IN-PERSON event.

FREE Trainings for all Arizona educators until August 31st, 2024!
The Arizona Department of Education has partnered with the Center for Recruitment and Retention of Mathematics Teachers (CRR) to offer free professional learning opportunities until September 2024. The goals of the institute are to provide teachers an exciting opportunity for professional growth, to establish a rich community of teachers on which to derive support and encouragement, and to create ongoing support for lasting and durable changes to teaching and learning in each classroom.
New Teacher Induction Program - For Secondary Math Teachers
This includes those in their 1st or 2nd year of teaching middle or high school math, math-focused special education teachers, and experienced teachers that are new to teaching math in grades 6-12 . The New Teacher Induction Program is a vital part of any 1st or 2nd year mathematics teachers’ journey to staying in the profession. They have the opportunity to receive an $800 stipend for their full participation in the program while receiving monthly professional development and timely coaching support.
All the information can be found on our website: https://crr.math.arizona.edu/induction Although the in-person component is hosted in Tucson, if enough people apply from the Phoenix and surrounding area, we could potentially set-up a remote location for attendance in the Phoenix area lead by one of our facilitators and connected to our Main Session via zoom.
Here is what past participants have said of this program:
· “These workshops helped me a lot to figure out what best practices I should use to make Mathematics more meaningful for the kids. Improving my teaching methodologies and creating more interactive lessons.” - HS Math Teacher
· “My coach provided emotional support (encouragement in many forms), which is sometimes just as important for new teachers as the math content.” - MS Math Teacher
· “The greatest benefit to me as a mentor was to see my mentees grow in so many aspects of school and social life. These are proud moments for a mentor! Possibly the greatest benefit for my mentees was that they were less scared to fail, because they could come to me and ask me for help. And they knew they would be safe to share their feelings and challenges.” - MS Math Teacher
· “I felt that the coaching was so important because my coach helped give me a boost of confidence in my teaching and would ask questions or mention things that I could focus on.” - MS Math Teacher
Here is a flyer and a link to apply for the Program.

Math Opportunities Around the Globe
TRBF - New Name, Same Passion
A Note from the Thomas R. Brown Foundation:
Nearly 20 years ago the Thomas R. Brown Foundation (TRBF) began offering economics-focused professional development programs to K-12 educators in Southern Arizona. Over that time we have dramatically increased the number and variety of our offerings. In the midst of the pandemic we, like educators around the world, went virtual. The new PD delivery methods we adopted make it possible for us to reach a more geographically diverse audience.
While TRBF is a name that is meaningful to Southern Arizonans and to educators who have participated in our workshops, it doesn’t quickly communicate our mission in economics education to those we have not yet served. To better connect with economic educators around the country (and beyond), we are adopting a new name and fresh look.
What’s changing?
Starting now professional development programs for middle and high school educators, previously offered under the TRBF name, will be provided by Econiful. We believe Econiful provides clarity about our organization’s focus and better conveys our belief that life is full of economics! Econiful’s logo has been designed to welcome educators into the community of economic thinkers.
What’s staying the same?
We will continue to honor the life and work of Tom Brown by developing and delivering high-quality virtual economics PD programs for educators at no monetary cost to our attendees.
What does this mean for you as a member of our educator audience?
Anyone can attend virtual PD events through Econiful, but if you are a current classroom educator of students in Grade 6 or higher who is still interested in economics-focused PD, you will want to create a free Econiful membership at Econiful.org. As a member, you will receive the Econiful newsletter, be able to register for PD events with greater ease, and access a member profile that displays all your upcoming and past PD events in one place.
If you are an elementary educator, our partner, the University of Arizona Office of Economic Education (OEE), will continue to serve you. If you already receive newsletters for elementary educators you don’t need to do anything. If you want to be alerted to elementary offerings (and aren’t already), please click here.
Please contact Megan Kirts if you have questions. We look forward to supporting you throughout the 2022-2023 school year!
