Fall 2023
GNETS-Serving Clayton and Henry Counties
A Word From Our Director-Derrick Gilchrist!
Greetings!
The fall season is here and the Ash Street Center is excited about all the events and activities we have planned. Our focus at the Ash Street Center remains on providing therapeutic supports to meet the needs of all students assigned to us for services. The Neurosequential Model in Education continues to inform our staff on the impacts of trauma and what it truly means to be “Trauma Responsive”.
During this fall season we look forward to resuming our equine therapy in collaboration with the Calvin Center as well as continuing to partner with Viewpoint Healthcare, who provides talk therapy for students. Our mission is to help our students learn ways of managing feelings of distress, so as not to disrupt their ability to learn or the learning environment for others. We are extremely proud of the number of students who returned to a less restrictive environment for the 2023 – 2024 school year.
We encourage all of our parents and stakeholders to rally around our most vulnerable students as they face the difficult challenge of modifying their behaviors and becoming solution-oriented students.
We look forward a great fall and successful school year!
Best Wishes,
Derrick Gilchrist

Hello South Metro GNETS Parents and Guardians,
I hope you all are having a wonderful start to this school year. This year we are promoting student success and excellence. As parents we can help our students by encouraging our students to read 30 minutes a day. Students who read a variety of books each day are better prepared for the school year and testing. Reading can also increase your student’s confidence.
Below are some helpful ways to increase your students reading this school year:
* Encourage students to checkout a book weekly from the school library center or obtain free books from the school Readbox section in the library.
*Visit the Ash Street Library Center on our school website (https://009.clayton.k12.ga.us/for_students/media_center)
* Set a reading time at home for your students to read for 30 minutes at home.
* Give incentives for reading such as points for screen time, reward, or verbal recognition.
* Visit your students local library and obtain a library card: Clayton County Library System (Location: https://claytonpl.org/locations/ ) or Henry County Library System (Locations:https://henrylibraries.org/how_can_i/let_the_library_help_me/find_a_librarys_location_and_hours.php )
* Encouraging students to engage in virtual reading programs and games such as Teach Your Monster (Grades K-4) or Education World (Grade K-12)
* Finding a Little Free Library near you: https://littlefreelibrary.org/ or visiting our local Little Free Library at the Ash Street Center
These are just a few tips to help build your student reading skills and confidence for this school year.
