Rocket Update September 30th
Week 9 π
We are at the last week before our Fall Break. I wanted to thank all of the families who made it to our Movie Night event on Friday. We had a great turn out despite the heat. We hope you had a great evening with your family!
There is NO SCHOOL on Friday for students. Friday is a teacher work day ONLY.
When we return from break on Monday, October 14th we will be rolling out a new MORNING DROP OFF plan. The details are below... The plan will include one lane of traffic that allows for students to be dropped off on the sidewalk ONLY. This will help to remove the possibility of a student getting dropped off in the middle of unloading traffic. Please take a close look at the diagram so you are familiar of the change for October 14th.
We have also had a couple of incidents recently of parents upset at our teacher's for enforcing the drop off rules and expectations. These have involved parents yelling or trying to intimidate a teacher. PER A.R.S. 15-507 A person who knowingly abuses a teacher or other school employee on school grounds or while the teacher or employee is engaged in the performance of his duties is guilty of a class 3 misdemeanor.
Please treat our teacher's with respect. They are out there to keep your student safe. If we do have parents who are yelling at teacher's or confronting them we will seek police support and you will be "trespassed", meaning you will not be allowed on Rose Lane campus. That includes the drop off area. We appreciate your understanding and willingness to make Rose Lane a safer campus. If you have any questions regarding any of this please reach out me by email.
All of that aside, let's have a great week before break! There are so many great things happening on campus that I don't want these safety changes to overshadow that. Please continue to ensure your kiddos are here on time everyday as we close out this 1st quarter. Have an amazing week everyone!
Your Rose Lane Principal,
Andre Reyes, M.Ed.
RULER RECAP π
As I mentioned last week our students have been exploring mindfulness. The second tier to mindfulness is βSelf Regulationβ.
Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage your behavior and your reactions to feelings and things happening around you.
There are numerous strategies for self-regulation. Not all strategies work for everyone in the same way. Variables such as past experiences, comfortableness, and situational factors can impact what strategies work best for a person in a given situation. There are a number of key factors to consider.
For students, it is important to expose them to a wide variety of strategies in order for them to decide what works best for them.
Practice, practice, practice. The more the chosen strategies are practiced, even outside of a situation with strong emotions, the easier it will be for a student to put into practice the strategy when an emotionally charged situation occurs.
Offering choices can be invaluable. For example, you may ask a student if they would like to sit at their seat and use a strategy or go to the Calm Down Area to use their strategy.
Students should each have at least one portable strategy that they can use anywhere as they wonβt have a Calm Down box at the playground or cafeteria.
Reinforce to students it is normal to use strategies - we all need them.
Some regulation strategies we have been practicing include, breathing, finger tracing, singing, listening to calming music, yoga/stretching, visualizing our safe/happy place. I encourage you to talk with your child about what strategy is their favorite and how you can incorporate this at home for them as well. Feel free to check out some of the resources below, including a strategy board you could create at home.
