The OLIS Fall 2019 Continuing Education session is open! The fall session runs from September to January and includes programs on a variety of topics, ranging from resources at the RI State Library, to teen services with impact, to getting the most from your email newsletters. To view the full calendar and register for programs, visit the OLIS Continuing Education Calendar.
As a follow-up to this summer's Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Summit, OLIS would like to highlight a few of our September/October programs that will take a deeper dive into EDI topics:
- In Addressing Barriers to Effective Communications: Sensitivity Training, the Ocean State Center for Independent Living will offer an interactive session to learn how to communicate more effectively with blind, vision impaired, deaf, hearing impaired and/or physically disabled patrons.
- Katelyn Duncan from the Worcester Public Library will present on Creating Space for New Americans and English Learners, based on her experience working to make immigrants, refugees and English learners more welcome in the library.
As always, everyone in the RI library community is welcome to register for and attend all OLIS continuing education programs.

September & October Events
YALSA Institute: Teen Services with Impact
Library teen services are about more than getting teens into the library. These services are about the impact libraries can have on the lives of teens. In this session participants learn how to describe the value of what they do for and with teens, build an understanding of how social emotional learning fits into the work that they do with and for teens, and explore how to engage with community to develop services that ultimately help teens to grow up successfully.

You are encouraged to bring any and all materials created for your program (including marketing materials, game boards, reading logs, review templates, etc.) to share with the group. This is a great opportunity to hear what has and has not worked for your peers, receive feedback on your program and come away with new ideas. This session will also include some brainstorming for the 2020 CSLP slogan "Imagine Your Story," which reflects the theme of fairy tales, mythology and fantasy.

Fairly Useful: Copyright in Libraries, Part One
Today librarians and other information professionals can hardly escape the conundrum of intellectual property law, especially copyright. From issues such as public domain, fair use, digitization, and e-media, the library finds its work immersed in copyright every day. Libraries represent the careful balance in copyright law: they serve both the economic and “use and access” purposes of copyright. Libraries are, therefore, economic engines of both copyright law and knowledge distribution. Do you need to develop an understanding of modern copyright as it fits into the mission of libraries? How does fair use affect both library staff and patrons? Drawing on case law, anecdotes, and his own research, attorney and librarian Kyle K. Courtney will address these questions and more in an informative and interactive session.
