College of Education Newsletter
June 2023
Message from the Dean:
- Although the Declaration of Independence was dated July 4, Congress actually voted for independence from Great Britain on July 2, 1776. The document wasn't signed by everyone until August 2nd, 1776.
- John Adams believed that Independance Day should be celebrated on the 2nd, not the 4th.
- Three of the presidents who signed the Declaration of Independence actually died on July 4th. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson died on July 4, 1826, and James Monroe died on July 4, 1831.
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania rings (actually it's tapped not rung) the Liberty Bell thirteen times at 2 pm on July 4th to honor the 13 original states.
- After the Civil War, African Americans in the South embraced Independence Day as a celebration of their newly won freedom.
- On July 4th in 1876, Suffragists crashed the centennial celebration at Independence Hall to present a "Declaration of the Rights of Women."
- Mary Katharine Goddard, who was commissioned to print copies of the Declaration of Independence, added her name below the original signers.
- Portia, Arkansas in Lawrence County, is the home of the oldest continuous Fourth of July Celebration in Arkansas.
- Americans spend over one billion dollars each year on fireworks.
- It's estimated that over 150 million hot dogs are eaten on the 4th of July.
As we celebrate, let's remember all of our heroes who have advocated and fought for freedom, liberty, and justice. Happy Fourth of July! -Vicki Groves-Scott

In the Classroom:
Students in Ms. Catherine Miller’s (Department of Elementary, Literacy, and Special Education) Summer Science Concepts class explore how the eye works with the help of Guest Speaker Dr. Beau Barnes from VisionCare Arkansas.
Dr. Barnes provided visuals and explanations of common refractive errors and how they are corrected. He also discussed common vision issues found in school-aged children and signs teachers can look for in order to better support students and parents with recommendations to an Optometrist.
Students were also given tips by Dr. Beau on how to keep their eyes healthy. The main tips discussed were to limit screen time and the 20/20/20 Rule. “Every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds to look at an item that is 20 feet away.”

Michael Garlington:
Michael Garlington, a recent graduate of UCA's School Leadership, Management, and Administration program, was featured in the local media due to his inspiring story of becoming a teacher. Below is Michael's story in his own words.
"I was born in Conway, Arkansas, and attended Conway High School as a part of the 2015 graduating class. I went on to attend the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff where I graduated in 2019 with my Bachelors degree. During my time at UAPB , I majored in Secondary Education focused on Social Studies. I had always wanted to be a teacher since my final year in high school. I believe that a teacher is one of, if not the most powerful career profession in the workforce. At UAPB, I passed the Praxis I and PLT 7-12 exam, but had major trouble passing my content test. I ended up graduating in four years with my bachelors but was forced to switch majors even after I had begun my student teaching in my last semester. Nonetheless, I remained focused on becoming a licensed teacher. It took me over six failed attempts to finally pass my content test after I had already begun in the teaching profession at eStem Public Charter Schools. With the help of Fletcher Education Solutions and major determination and focus , I was finally able to pass my content and in the process was accepted in the School Leadership, Administration and Management graduate program at the University of Central Arkansas. Becoming a principal and school leader has always been a goal of mine in the field of education, and with the help of the wonderful professors and discipline and hard work, I was able to graduate with my Master of Science in SLMA on May 6, 2023. What an honor it has been to be a part of this great university during my graduate experience."

Brooke Harris:
Brooke Harris, a UCA Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) graduate, was recently named Teacher of Year for Virtual Arkansas.
Brooke is a second-year Science Teacher with Virtual Arkansas. Brooke said, "Most of my students are learning from home and have had fairly limited opportunities for STEM education in the past. My passion is sparking joy for learning in all of my students, regardless of their backgrounds. At VA we have a great amount of time dedicated to tier-two interventions as well as working one-on-one with students. I take advantage of this time and use it as a way to get to know my students and work with them to help determine learning strategies that will work best for them. Once students are able to gain confidence in their ability to learn, they then have the mental energy to be able to seek out subjects that they are interested in and find out their own passions."
When asked about her time in the UCA MAT program Brooke said, "The UCA MAT program was able to provide me with support and guidance on my journey to becoming a teacher. Many of my courses stressed the importance of not only recognizing diversity but also honoring it. We can’t use a 'one-size fits all' approach to teaching when every single student in our classroom is unique. My professors in the MAT program did a great job of preparing me for meeting the needs of my students. They also have been there to cheer me on for my successes and support me with my struggles."

Technology in the Classroom - Best Practices:
Dr. Stefanie Sorbet (Department of Elementary, Literacy, and Special Education):
In ELSE 4309 positive classroom environment, we spend time discussing how to have appropriate and difficult conversations with parents regarding K-6 students' progress. Junior block interns work in small groups to reenact their parent teacher conference scenario and video these using their iPad. They are allowed to use clips or whichever ap they choose to create this. We then share these with the whole class on viewing day to critique how well the parent-teacher conference went as well as discuss what worked well and what we may have handled differently. It is a great activity that sparks conversation and sharing while also provides practice in role playing situations that will arise between a teacher and a parent. Juniors leave this experience with a stronger sense of self and gain confidence in their ability to have difficult conversations with parents and caregivers in order to best serve the K-6 student.
