School Board Recognition Month
January is National School Board Month and all 8 of our school boards that we work with are the hardest working and best advocates you can find!
The School Board is such an integral part of the school district. They oversee the district, adopt a budget and set a tax rate. On top of that, they stay on top of student expectations and stay in touch with the community. They make decisions that benefit the whole community without the pressure of a political party. This paragraph on the TASB website really speaks to us as parents. "Board members are the link between the school system and the public. As advocates for public education, board members help grow community support for public schools and report district progress by communicating with the community, students, staff, parents, and the media." Board members can do this by being at events being held in the district, speaking to their community and being involved with public education advocacy groups. That's what we expect of our Board members. Someone who is engaged and involved. We see this with many of our RootEd Board members. They are at the Robotics contest cheering on the students, they are involved with other groups to learn good practices and they are on the phone with the city council when the school flashing lights don't work.
Our expectations of the School Board are that they are engaged and listen to the community because this is what makes an excellent district.

Rep Spotlight of the Month
Kelley Moriarty, our RootEd Rep for Burke Elementary in Northside ISD, is a huge asset to have for our organization and her school. She truly understands what being RootEd means and is a huge cheerleader for her school. It's very obvious in her social media stories that Burke is a wonderful community.
"I came to Burke when my oldest son was about to turn one. Burke has a true family atmosphere like no other school I've taught in. The most surprising thing was how many colleagues brought their kids to Burke too- it made me notice the culture of the school, and reflect on what I want for my own child when they enter school. (My other schools had very few staff kids attend!) Since then, I've had two Burke Bears of my own enter the dual language program here. As a parent, I am so impressed with what my boys have achieved! More importantly, I cannot say enough about how well my children are loved at Burke. It's not just my children or other staff kids- the entire staff goes above and beyond to show students (and parents!) how much they are loved and part of our community.
I got involved with RootEd because I want people to know how hard my colleagues work (and how impressive our students are!) The public needs to know that Burke (and our other community schools!) provide a service that is irreplaceable within the neighborhoods and city we serve."
