Virtue of the Month: Perseverance
Perseverance is the will to carry on. Once we discern our true direction, we stay the course for however long it takes, regardless of obstacles that arise. When creativity inspires us, we do the work required to bring it to fruition. We patiently pursue our goals, remaining steadfast and focused. We persist with a task until it is completed. People can trust us to finish what we start. When our relationships are tested, we have the commitment to work things through. We are determined to succeed.
You are practicing perseverance when you...
- have a strong sense of purpose
- have the will to overcome obstacles
- remain committed to what you want to do
- determined to finish what you start
- are trustworthy in your relationships
- do what it takes to stay the course

Title 1 Targeted Assistance transition to Schoolwide
Woodholme will become a Schoolwide Title 1 school for the 2019-20 school year. What that means is that instead of providing services to a smaller, select number of students like we have done through the Targeted Assistance program, now all students can receive additional services or benefits. See below in the Principal's Message for more information.
Vision & Hearing
We will have annual Hearing and Vision Screening Feb. 6-19. This is a free service through Baltimore County. Included in our screening are KG students not previously tested, grade 1 & 4 students. Students from other grades may be referred if there are concerns. If you would like to refer your child or have questions, please email iberman2@bcps.org.
Please view the February calendar for information on upcoming events at Woodholme! Click on the February Events link to view the calendar. Smencilgrams go on sale on Monday, February 4th for $2 each! Be sure to take the Stakeholder Survey! We want to hear from you!
A Note From the Principal
Dear Woodholme Families,
Well January certainly provided us with some weather challenges, and those continued into February. Inclement weather is possible at any time during the winter months, so please continue to check TV/radio news or online or social media posts for any BCPS closings, delays or early dismissals. Please do not wait for the school or county Messenger phone calls or emails to notify you of closings, delays or early dismissals. We do not send the Woodholme delay or closing calls out right away in the morning so that they do not disturb families too early. Parents are expected to seek this information via the media.
BCPS is currently conducting a Stakeholder Satisfaction Survey to give our stakeholders the opportunity to provide feedback on the educational program in BCPS. The survey is available for students in Grades 3 through 12 as well as all parents, community members and staff. It is anonymous, and it’s available in 16 languages on any phone, tablet, or computer. You are also welcome to take the survey at our school. Thanks for getting online before March 2nd to take the quick survey. The link for the survey is above in the newsletter. For the many families who give us such great feedback about the Woodholme experience, this is a great opportunity to let others know. We strive to make sure each student has a positive school experience with great academic growth!
Title 1 Targeted Assistance to Schoolwide Planning Process
Woodholme will become a schoolwide Title 1 school for the 2019-20 school year. What that means is that instead of providing services to a smaller, select number of students eligible through the Targeted Assistance program, now all students can receive additional services or benefits. No student identification is made that renders them eligible or ineligible for services. Students identified as most at risk are given additional assistance. The program promotes improved instruction for all students and constitutes comprehensive school reform. With the Targeted Assistance program, parents had to be notified of students' eligibility for Title 1 services, but with the Schoolwide Program, no parent notification of additional services is necessary because it is part of the whole school program based on the school's comprehensive needs.
However for both programs, parent involvement is important and necessary, so look for schoolwide parent involvement next year for Title 1. In order to transition to full Title 1 for the 2019-20 school year, we have formed a Title 1 Planning team of stakeholders (staff, parents, community members, etc.) to meet monthly to develop a schoolwide program. Thanks to our parents and community members who have volunteered. Contact an administrator or a Title 1 teacher if you have any questions about the transition to Schoolwide Title 1.
Stay safe and warm this month, and as always, thank you for your support and collaboration!
Sincerely,
Principal Young
