During Trimester 2, 91 students at Canterbury were absent for 10% or more of the days. Trends such as this have a long-term impact on our community. Please help us put an end to this trend.
According to the U.S. Department of Education, chronic absenteeism can be devastating:
Chronic absenteeism may prevent children from reaching early learning milestones.
Children who are chronically absent in preschool, kindergarten, and first grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the third grade. Students who cannot read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely than proficient readers to drop out of high school.
Irregular attendance can be a better predictor of whether students will drop out before graduation than test scores.
A study of public school students in Utah found that an incidence of chronic absenteeism in even a single year between 8th and 12th grade was associated with a seven-fold increase in the likelihood of dropping out.
Frequent absences from school can shape adulthood.
High school dropout, which chronically absent students are more likely to experience, has been linked to poor outcomes later in life, from poverty and diminished health to involvement in the criminal justice system.

2024 Sodexo Future Chef Competition
The 2024 Sodexo Future Chef competition will be held Thursday, March 14 at 4:15 p.m. at Hannah Beardsley Middle School. This year's theme is "your favorite food from home" and District 47 students in 3rd-5th grades are invited to submit recipes! Recipes will be reviewed by Sodexo and one winner from each school will be chosen to participate in the competition. In addition, this year kindergarten - 2nd graders are invited to participate in a culinary coloring contest. Coloring sheets will be available at D47 elementary schools by February 13. Students who complete a coloring sheet can return it to their teacher, who will then forward it on to the cafeteria manager to be displayed in the school cafeteria. All recipes and coloring sheets must be submitted to school cafeteria managers by March 1, 2024. See the links below. Questions about Sodexo Future Chef events can be directed to Terry Wenzel, Sodexo general manager, at twenzel@d47.org.
