Summer Term - 15th June 2023
Message from the Head of School
Dear Parents/Carers
It has been an exciting week at HJS with a range of visits and activities taking place. Year 4 spent the day investigating the local wildlife at The Stockyard in Bushy Park. This was a great opportunity to discover the different insects, plants and animals in the habitat. The children's behaviour was exceptional and they all came back buzzing about what they had learnt! We also welcomed the Science Dome on Monday which provided the children with a unique way of learning about the digestive system and how the human body processes the food we eat. Finally, year 6 have been cooking fajitas, which has brought a lovely aroma throughout the school. They looked great year 6 and am sure they tasted great too!
As the weather continues to be glorious, please remember to ensure your child has a named water bottle in school and they have applied sun cream before school. There is so much research that shows the impact of dehydration (even at a small level) on a child's learning capacity. Plain black or red sun hats are also permitted (also named).
Finally don't forget we have our Scholastic Book Fair this week. This will be open both this evening and tomorrow after school so please do pop along. Reminder we are a cashless school so card payments only.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend and remember it is our Sports Day on Wednesday 21st June. Lower School timings are 9.15am to 11.15am and Upper School timings are 10.30am 11.30am. I hope to see lots of you there!
Mr Jon James

Messages from the Office
Jewellery
We have recently updated our uniform policy to outline guidelines for earrings during PE lessons. Earrings need to be removed before PE lessons to ensure the safety of all pupils. In the event that earrings cannot be removed, tape will be applied to provide protection.
I would encourage parents to teach their children how to take their earrings out (if they come out) and how to put them back in.
Finally no necklaces or bracelets should be worn in school. Children coming into school wearing these will be asked to remove them.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation with this.
Free School Meals
During the pandemic, children that were entitled to free school meals would receive a supermarket voucher to use during the school holidays to help families with the cost of lunches while children were at home. We are fortunate that the Richmond Borough is still currently providing supermarket vouchers during the school holidays for families that are entitled to free school meals this academic year.
In July 2023 we will be issuing vouchers from Achieving for Children which will be £20 per week (£120) for families that are entitled to free school meals to help with the cost of lunches during the summer holidays.
Even if your child does not have school meals at school, you can still apply.
NHS South West London
Hospital services are currently very busy due to extreme heat, pollen and pollution levels. If you, or your child, has asthma or other respiratory conditions find out more about how to keep safe: https://www.southwestlondon.icb.nhs.uk/news/nhs-issues-heatwave-warning-for-older-people-and-people-with-asthma/
Caterlink Survey
Caterlink would like to invite parents/carers to complete the following survey to help improve the service they provide to our children.
Sports for Champions
On Tuesday, HJS had a very exciting visit from a GB basketball player - Pierre Henry-Fontaine. Pierre's assembly included a lot of powerful messages to children about resilience, staying active and following your goals despite the setbacks that you are faced with along the way. The children also had their fitness circuits to complete - it was great to see so many children being physically active!
I would personally like to thank all the children and parents for their fundraising efforts. As a school, we were able to raise over £1,300! A huge accomplishment!

5B had an amazing time in the science dome this week. They learnt all about the digestive system and loved the interactive activities!
