Career Exploration - Worksites
Our P94M @ 188 proudly collaborates with local business in New York City to provide opportunities for students to learn valuable skills that are required to enter the work force. Here are some excerpts from some of our students across various locations!
David N. - Food Pantry
"A food pantry worker is a person who works at the food bank. A food pantry worker collects, organizes and distributes food to people. A food pantry worker works at food banks, schools, community kitchens, and churches. They usually work during the day. I would like to be a food pantry worker because I would like to give food to people who need food to eat. This would make me feel very happy!"
Maria R. - Teacher's Assistant
"A teacher’s assistant is a person who helps students with their classwork. Teacher’s assistants are also known as Paraprofessionals. They help the classroom teachers teach students.The teacher’s assistant provides individual attention and assistance to students that need help. A teacher’s assistant works with students in Elementary School, Middle School, and High School.Teaching assistants usually work during school hours. I would like to be a teaching assistant because I can give much needed support to students who need help with their classwork."
Ahnaf K. - Library
"I greet people at Lincoln Center because I like to say “Hi, welcome to Lincoln Center.” I take the subway train to Lincoln Center on Sunday mornings. I like to go to Lincoln Center because I am excited to greet people. I go to the Bill H. Rose Atrium which is behind the fountain."
Lily S. - The Learning Cafe
"I work at the Learning Cafe at P.S. 188 in the morning. I cook for my classmates and my teacher, Ms. Gomez. I make salad and salad dressing for Ms. Gomez. I like to cook because I like to eat food and salad."
Kristin L. - Library
"The librarian works at the library. The library is across from the school. I go to the library on Tuesday and Friday. I go to the library at 9:30 and I finish working at 10:30. I organize the books and turn them over. I put the books in the bin. I give them to the librarian. I like working at the library because I like helping the librarian. I work with Ms. K and Theileen, Ahnaf, Zachory, and Thalia."
Career Exploration - Job Research
Our students at both P94M @ 276 and P94M @ 188 researched different jobs and roles in their favorite fields. They answered Wh- Questions (who, what, where, when and why) to discover information about their future career paths.
William R. - Bus Driver
"A bus driver is the person who keeps the students safe, drives them to school and takes them back home. The bus driver also takes students on school trips . Bus drivers need to get a bus driver’s license to drive the bus. Everyone who rides the bus needs to wear a seatbelt to stay safe. The bus driver picks up the students from their home in the morning, and in the afternoon he or she drops them home. The bus driver drives on the street to get to the school. A bus driver picks up students and drops off students to different schools. When the bus stops, the bus driver needs to show the stop sign so other drivers would stop to prevent accidents. The matron is on the bus, she or he protects students, and calls the parents to let them know that the students are almost home. The matron also makes sure that students don’t do bad things such as standing in the bus. I want to be a bus driver because I would like to pick up kids, and keep them safe. I like buses and I like to drive them! The bus driver’s job is important because the kids need to go to school."
Christopher E. - Tour Guide
"A tour guide is a person who gives tours to tourists. A tour guide gives information, maps and tours for visitors to help them have a good explanation when they visit a new place. A tour guide works in museums, cities, historical landmarks, and on busy streets. They work during the day and sometimes during the night. I want to become a tour guide because I can teach tourists about places and I think it is fun. I can teach tourists about old things from the past and also new things as well."
Wesley C. - Bus Driver
"The bus driver is a person who drives the bus. The bus driver picks up the students. The bus driver drives them home. The bus driver works mornings and afternoons. He wants to be a bus driver because he likes driving buses and takes kids to school. A bus driver makes it easy for the kids to get to school."
Peer Interviews
Students who conducted research about future careers interviewed their peers who currently work at worksites. The result is the marvelous videos below!
