Chinese Class at Huntington Gardens
Chinese students visited the Chinese Gardens at The Huntington on March 12, 2025. The gardens represented 1800s Suzhou elite culture: structures surrounding a small lake are filled with iconic symbols of prosperity and wealth, presenting an appreciation of tranquil, formalized nature that included plants and animals.
Students were able to go on their own self-guided tours and take pictures of various architectural features such as moon gates, zigzag bridges, limestone rocks, waterfalls, and pavilions. They reported back about the views with descriptions of how feng shui elements were incorporated into each aspect of the garden, and how each perspective can create its own landscape painting.
