Message from Pathfinder Principal, Ms. Harris
Report cards will come home with your student this Friday, April 5th. All students from kindergarten through 5th grade receive a report card three times a year. The Standards-Based Report Card your child will receive each trimester informs you on how they are performing based on formal and informal assessments and the Common Core State Standards. Clear communication and a strong partnership between home and school help to provide a positive and successful learning experience for your child.
There are several important report card components, which include: a record of your child’s attendance, academic standards, behavior expectations, and any additional services your child has received. Your child’s teacher may also provide additional written comments. Each category will have a designation for how your child is progressing toward meeting the standard in this area. Remember that every child grows and develops at their own rate. Ask your child questions about their report card and together identify areas of accomplishment and growth to celebrate!
You can help partner with us to help your child succeed with the following:
- Build a habit of good attendance. Your child misses important instruction that cannot be made up when absent, late, or leaving early.
- Keep a consistent routine and be sure your child gets enough sleep.
- Model and encourage healthy eating habits.
- Give your child the opportunity for physical activity every day and to play outdoors safely.
- Read with your child every day. Talk with your child about what you’ve read and encourage all attempts at reading.
- Provide many opportunities to draw, write letters, and words. Encourage all attempts at writing.
- Provide opportunities for your child to explore a variety of objects indoors and outside. Count them and/or identify their colors, etc.
If you have any questions about your child’s report card or want to discuss it further, please contact your child’s teacher. We look forward to continuing to partner with you and supporting growth for all students as we head into spring and first grade is quickly approaching!

It's the Time of Year for Spring Allergies
Seasonal allergies really flair up this time of year. If your child suffers from seasonal allergies, please remember to give their medication before school or at their regular time. It really helps them to get through the day. If you feel your child is experiencing seasonal allergies, please reach out to your child’s pediatrician for information on medications that help treat symptoms. Common symptoms of pollen or seasonal allergies are:
- Stuffy/runny nose
- Itchy, red, or watery eyes
- Sore throat/constantly clearing throat
- Coughing
- Feeling tired/headachy
Allergies will not cause a fever or body aches and your child will need to stay home if they are experiencing those symptoms.
I have included a link with information on how to help your child through allergy season. Please contact me at (425) 366-3809 if you need additional information or assistance.
Thank you,
Alyssa Richer, School Nurse

SUPPORT LEARNING AT HOME
Attendance Matters!
Nine or less for school success! Please help your child succeed in school by building the habit of good attendance. School achievement goes hand-in-hand with good attendance!
Washington State has a mandatory school attendance law that aligns with our district attendance policy and requires families to contact the school every time a student is absent. Please call our Attendance Hotline at 425-366-3805 before 10:15 each day to report every absence.
Your assistance in getting your child to school each day is appreciated by our entire staff and positively impacts your child’s overall success!
Did you know?
- As early as Kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Good attendance includes being on time and limiting early dismissals.
- Missing 10% of the school year (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn and read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two, every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance and academic risk in the future.
- Absences can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.
Math Games to Play at the Grocery Store
Here are some fun, educational games you can play at the grocery store with your children. Head to the produce department and let the adventure begin!
A wide range of questions can be asked while selecting your fruits and vegetables.
Length
Which is longer, the cucumber or the carrot?
Color
Find a vegetable the same color as the white asparagus.
Size
What's the largest vegetable you can find?
Size
Stand by the smallest vegetable you can find.
Weight/Estimation
Which feels heavier, the cauliflower or the lettuce?
Measurement
The concept of 16 ounces/one pound is most likely too advanced for kindergartners, but your child can try to estimate/guess the weight of a vegetable and then weigh it to determine the actual weight.
Show your child two different fruits, and have him/her guess which item weighs more.
More Grocery Shopping Ideas:
- Give your child a shopping list with the number you need of each item. Have him/her make tally marks to indicate what you’ve put in your cart.
- Compare prices and determine which products cost more.
- Estimate which bag of groceries is heaviest. Estimate how many items are in a bag.
- Sort like items (sort by can or box, type of food, or even by the beginning letter). You can sort the items and have your child guess the sorting rule.
- Graph how many items are in each group.
- Challenge: Figure out the unit price and determine what brand offers the best deal.
