DON'T MISS THIS: Parent Ed Night - Summary and Resources Below!
Topic: Educating Human Potential
Presented by: Biff Maier
Date: October 3, 2024
Location: Ridgeline Montessori Charter School
Why It Matters:
Montessori education plays a crucial role in guiding children toward well-being by addressing intellectual, emotional, social, and life-management skills. It nurtures resilience and adaptability, equipping students to thrive in a complex world and manage challenges effectively.
Key Takeaways:
Intellectual development: Montessori emphasizes critical thinking, flexibility, and a growth mindset. From cause-and-effect activities in toddlerhood to logical reasoning in middle school, students learn to make informed decisions, think for themselves, and adapt to new information. By providing intentional and structured learning experiences, Montessori encourages children to engage deeply with their work and take ownership of their learning.
Emotional health: Emotional regulation is a key focus, with teachers guiding students to express and manage complex feelings. From toddlers learning to trust their caregivers to middle school students exploring vulnerability and honesty, children build emotional intelligence and resilience. Montessori practices like reflecting on feelings, kindness, and conflict resolution help students navigate emotions in healthy ways, which is particularly important in combating childhood anxiety.
Social well-being: Montessori fosters healthy social relationships through self-acceptance, generosity, and authentic connections. Toddlers are supported to engage in positive social interactions, while middle school students explore their values and develop skills for collaboration and solitude. The emphasis on listening, inclusion, and cultural celebration builds a strong sense of community and belonging across all age groups.
Life-management and executive function: Montessori schools are often referred to as “Executive Functioning 101” because of the focus on self-regulation, goal-setting, and decision-making. Students learn to plan, set goals, initiate tasks, and manage frustration. From organizing their workspaces to running businesses in middle school, Montessori students develop essential life-management skills that prepare them for the real world.
Bottom Line:
Montessori education provides a comprehensive approach to developing well-being by cultivating intellectual, emotional, social, and life-management skills. These therapeutic classrooms help students grow into confident, capable, and balanced individuals, equipped to face life’s challenges.
Montessori’s emphasis on emotional regulation and independent problem-solving aligns with expert recommendations for managing anxiety. Strategies such as normalizing discomfort, embracing uncertainty, and using mindfulness techniques empower children to develop resilience, manage fear, and overcome challenges independently.

Volunteering - What You Need to Know
1. Volunteers are an integral part of the Ridgeline Community and there are many different ways to get involved. Volunteers serve on committees, prepare materials at home, assist with grounds work, act as crossing guards, help in classrooms, chaperone field trips and much more.
2. Families pledge to complete 40 hours of volunteer time per school year. To fully participate in most volunteer opportunities, volunteers must first complete a background check and volunteer code of conduct.
3. The School Community Coordinator will notify you via email when these 2 steps are complete and you are green badge approved!
4. We would love to get you connected in the ways that best fit your time and talents. Please visit our website for more information on volunteering. You can also reach out to Bethany Dilla, Ridgeline's School Community Coordinator at bethany.dilla@ridgeline.org for more information.

Why It Matters
New beginnings prompt the opportunity to form new habits! When it comes to volunteering, we need everyone to consistently track ALL volunteer hours throughout the school year in Track It Forward. Volunteer hour reporting is important for us to show support for Ridgeline when applying for grants and for reporting to our sponsoring district, Eugene 4J.

🩺 School Health Screening – October 30 🦷 Opt-Out Form Below
What’s Happening:
On Wednesday, October 30, we’re teaming up with the Community Health Centers of Lane County’s Dental Prevention Program and the Lions Club to provide free vision and dental screenings for all students!
Vision Screening Details:
The Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation (OLSHF), along with local Lions clubs, will conduct vision screenings in over 80% of Oregon school districts—including ours! Using the Welch Allyn SPOT Vision Screener, this screening measures your child’s eyes to detect potential vision issues. The device works like a digital camera with infrared light, identifying common vision problems. Screening results will be sent home within a few weeks, along with resources for eye exams if needed. Learn more about the vision screening program here.
Dental Screening Info:
All students will receive a dental screening as part of this all-school health event, along with their vision check. A Dental Screening is a quick look in the mouth to identify any visual oral problems, using a mirror and a flashlight. The child simply stands in front of the screener. If you would prefer your child not participate, you can opt-out using this form. Results from the screening will be shared with families.
Additional Dental Services:
If you'd like to enroll in more comprehensive dental services (hygiene exam, fluoride varnish, and dental sealants), make sure to return the yellow opt-in form that was sent home on September 27. Forms are due back to the office by Thursday, October 10. These additional services are offered twice a year, and the consent is valid for two years. Note: If your child already receives regular dental care, this service may not be necessary.
We’re excited to offer these free screenings to help keep our students healthy!
