TE KURA O HUATOKI. TERM 3, WEEK 5, 2024.
KIA ORA VOGELTOWN WHĀNAU!
Draft Mathematics and Statistics Curriculum
The Government/Ministry of Education has recently released their draft of the New Zealand Mathematics and Statistics curriculum. It was their goal to build on and improve previous versions of the maths learning area of the NZ Curriculum.
Their vision was for a clearer, more detailed curriculum to support quality teaching and learning. What you will see in the updated draft is a teaching sequence designed to engage tamariki through meaningful learning experiences that develop mastery of the knowledge, skills, and competencies that they need to be successful mathematicians.
Schools will also be provided with curriculum-aligned resources like teacher guides and student workbooks to assist teachers to implement the updated curriculum and to reduce workload as much as possible. Alongside this, professional learning and development will be offered and this will start with professional learning days later in the year.
Schools will be expected to use specific assessment tools so that there is a nationally consistent approach towards assessment. As is good practice with any assessment, information from these will help teachers to make decisions about responding to the learning needs of students and help schools to monitor the progress of students and to target areas of need.
If you would like to take a closer look at what the proposed curriculum looks like then follow this link: https://newzealandcurriculum.tahurangi.education.govt.nz/draft-maths-curriculum
Mā te wā! See you later!

LEARNING IS HARD WORK!
Learning can be daunting sometimes but with that comes the rewarding feeling of accomplishment when something is finally mastered. This is the concept of ‘the learning pit’. Good learners realise that success comes from hard work, that learning isn't easy; and the more you are challenged, the more you achieve! If you want to find out more about this try an internet search of the learning pit and you’ll find some great resources that explain this.

SICK CHILDREN
We are currently seeing cases of influenza-A, Covid-19 and gastro within our school community.
Gastro (also known as a tummy bug, rotavirus or norovirus) is an illness caused by an infection in the gut. Symptoms are nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and fever.
Gastro can spread easily to others, so a child should not be at school if they are vomiting or have diarrhoea.
A child can return to school after 48 hours (2 days) have passed since the last time they vomited or had diarrhoea.
The symptoms of Influenza-A can start suddenly and can include
fever or feeling feverish
chills
muscle or body aches
headache
runny or stuffy nose
cough
sore throat
upset stomach, vomiting or diarrhoea
Covid-19 symptoms include
A new or worsening cough
Sneezing and runny nose
Fever
Temporary loss of smell, or altered sense of taste
Sore throat
Shortness of breath
Fatigue or feeling tired
Please ensure you keep your child home until they are symptom free. Sending kids to school when they are sick does not support learning, takes up valuable teacher and office time, and also increases the changes of any illness being spread to others.
We also encourage good hygiene habits at school which can be continued at home, including:
Thorough washing of hands with soap and water, or using hand sanitizer
Not sharing drinks or food
Covering the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing
Thank you for your support in helping keep our school community healthy and safe.
CROSS COUNTRY
Later this term, we will be holding our school cross-country event, followed by the interschool competition for those who qualify. We encourage all children to actively participate.
Our focus is on personal achievement. We want each child to challenge themselves and do their personal best. It’s not about being the best but about each person pushing themselves to do their best. This is what matters most.

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
It is important that we know if you have a child starting school sometime in the remainder of this year or next year. This will allow us to put organisation in place for new students - especially those starting school, and to understand our predicted roll throughout the year.
You can do this by contacting the office to confirm that we have your child on our records, or by completing an enrolment form (which can be collected from the school or downloaded off our website).
If you know of anyone else living in zone that may be looking to enrol then please share this message with them.
