Students Put Learning into Action at the STEM Olympics
On Saturday, May April 27th, our elementary schools participated in the 9th annual ABCUSD Elementary STEM Olympics at Cerritos High School. Schools competed in scientific events like parachutes, catapults, dominoes & ping-pong ball races. This year, students also participated in a new math event. Awards were given to top competitors in each event, and overall, first place went to Hawaiian Elementary.
Whitney High School Earns Green Ribbon
Whitney High School has been officially recognized as a 2024 California Green Ribbon School at the Silver Level by the California Department of Education. This recognition highlights the school's commitment to sustainability and its innovative efforts in promoting environmental stewardship among its students and staff. Superintendent Dr. Gina Zietlow joined Whitney High School Principal Dr. Tuesday Stoffers and teacher/Eco Club Advisor Ms. Aileen Perry at Claremont High School for the official award ceremony earlier this week. Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction, Ms. Nancy Kim Portillo, presented the award. Whitney is one of only 41 schools in the state to earn the Green Ribbon Designation this year and is the second school in ABCUSD to earn this award. Bragg Elementary School was named as a California Green Ribbon School at the Silver Level last year. Congratulations to Whitney’s students and staff, who have created a greener school.

Wittmann Students Compete
Last weekend was a busy one for Wittmann Elementary School students. Not only did they have a team competing at the Elementary School STEM Olympics, but they also had teams competing at the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) Math Field Day and at the First LEGO League (FLL) Robotics Spring Showdown. Congratulations to the Wittmann Warriors, who did well at the STEM Olympics while earning top spots at the Math Field Day and FLL Spring Showdown.
Gonsalves Elementary Celebrates Autism Acceptance Month
Gonsalves students are celebrating Autism Acceptance Month with a variety of activities designed to break down barriers and create more understanding. Sixth-grade students joined students from the special day classes during a sensory-friendly chalk art activity, where they created beautiful artwork together. This experience allowed sixth-grade students to bond and learn ways to engage with children with different abilities. Later this month, students will participate in a multi-sensory event. Thank you to paraprofessional Vicente Castañeda for leading the efforts to bring these activities to students.
