Community Update Week of Oct 21st
Sharing information for the Wootton High School community.
Message from Mr. Nelson
It is Mental Health Awareness Week at Wootton! Let's take note of the importance that good mental health is to all of us. Mental Health Awareness Week is about breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health issues and encouraging dialogue. It highlights that mental health is just as important as physical health. By raising awareness, this week helps educate young people about recognizing signs of mental distress all while encouraging others to reach out for support. I recommend that students engage with the events next week. They have prepared by the amazing staff at Wootton to support you.
Be well,
Doug
Congratulations!

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month!
Media Center hosts El Pendón Estrellado presentation. Students received an amazing opportunity to learn about Clotilde Arias, a Peruvian immigrant who came to New York City in 1923 at age twenty-two to study music. Decades later she translated the National Anthem into the official Spanish version at the request of President Roosevelt in 1945. We were honored to learned about this historical event from the granddaughter of Clotilde Arias, Michelle Arias. Thank you to members of the Acatonics who sang the translation in Spanish! Mrs. Arias also encouraged students on the importance of seizing Bilingual opportunities. Sponsored by Mrs. Morejon, Hispanic Latino Student Union (HLSU), and Media Staff Slideshow

National School Bus Safety Week – October 21-25
Maryland State Police and the Maryland Center for School Safety remind motorists to stop for school buses. Pay attention when driving, especially in school zones during times of day when school buses are typically on routes. Stop when a bus stops for a routine stop. It is illegal to pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing. Prepare to stop when the school bus is flashing its yellow lights and be cautious of students moving towards buses during these times. Students of all ages are unpredictable. Therefore, prepare for the unexpected and maintain a safe distance from school buses at all times.

Attendance Is Important!
Regular daily attendance is expected. It is critical to a child's academic success. Parent/caregiver support of regular daily attendance is essential. Parents/caregivers should provide a note within 3 days stating the reason for absence. This will ensure the absence is marked excused. Students who were absent from school have the responsibility to request make-up work from their teacher.
