Congratulations to the Class of 2024!
Proud Panthers
Norton Primary School
On May 8th, the Department of Children and Youth completed an unannounced Preschool Licensing visit at Norton Developmental Preschool. During the visit, the program successfully demonstrated compliance in several key areas: program management through an administrator interview, staff professional development verification, classroom inspections, and a comprehensive review of the program's policies and procedures. Norton Developmental Preschool earned a 100% score on this inspection. Go Panthers!
Access to Test Scores
Norton City Schools would like to share a new feature that is available for parents/guardians in Progress Book. Parents/Guardians of students in grades 3-12 are now able to view results of the Ohio State Assessments. When you log into Parent Access in ProgressBook, there is a tab on the left hand side labeled assessment scores. Scores are available for grades 3-8 reading and math, grades 5 and 8 science, and the high school end of course exams. They will be uploaded for viewing on May 31, 2024. If you experience any issues logging into Parent Access for Progress Book, please contact Carina Smith (csmith@nortonpanthers.org) for assistance.
Keep On Reading
Summer is a great time to encourage students of all ages to continue engaging with books and learning in fun and interactive ways. Here are some summer reading activities suitable for students of all ages:
Reading Challenges: Create reading challenges with different categories like fiction, non-fiction, mystery, fantasy, etc. Students can set goals for the number of books they want to read over the summer and track their progress.
Book Clubs: Start a summer book club where students can choose a book to read together and then discuss it either online or in person. This can be done with friends, family, or through community organizations. The local library also offers summer reading programs. Just reach out and ask!
Outdoor Reading: Encourage students to take their books outside and read in different outdoor settings such as parks, beaches, or backyard tents. They can even create cozy reading nooks with blankets and pillows.
Literary Scavenger Hunts: Create scavenger hunts based on books or literary themes. Students can search for specific items mentioned in books or explore their neighborhoods looking for places that remind them of settings in their favorite stories.
Creative Projects: Encourage students to create their own book-related projects such as writing book reviews, making book trailers or posters, or even writing and illustrating their own stories.
Virtual Author Visits: Arrange virtual visits or interviews with authors where students can ask questions about their books, writing process, and inspiration.
Reading Passport: Create a "reading passport" where students can log the books they read over the summer. They can decorate their passports and earn stamps or stickers for each book completed.
Reading Rewards: Offer incentives or rewards for reaching reading goals, such as certificates, small prizes, or even a special end-of-summer celebration for avid readers.
Writing Prompts: Provide students with writing prompts inspired by the books they read to encourage them to reflect on their reading experiences and express their thoughts creatively.
By incorporating a variety of activities that cater to different interests and learning styles, you can help students maintain their reading skills and foster a lifelong love of learning throughout the summer months.

“Show Up and Shine” at Norton Primary
One of Norton Primary’s Building Goals for this school year was for the staff to build an environment that supports learning and is fun for the students, which will increase daily student attendance. Some of the fun activities held throughout the school year were Dance Party Fridays in the gymnasium, Spirit Weeks with crazy outfits, At-TEN-Dance programs (where at 10 AM we stop what we are doing and dance with DJ Dizzy Doc), and a fun assembly with Parker “Basketball” Jones. Parker “Basketball” Jones shared the importance of “Showing Up and Shining” during the assembly to support daily attendance at school. The Primary Staff would like to thank all of the students and their families for their support this school year. We hope that you had a fantastic time! Let's finish strong by “Showing Up and Shining”.

Fourth Grade Movie Business
The fourth grade students are excited that they are continuing the movie theater business this year. Students are learning about persuasive writing in language arts, entrepreneurship in social studies, and percentages and other concepts related to business in math. The team feels that running a business can incorporate these standards into a wonderful learning project. Students are asked to donate $1.00 and all proceeds are donated to local organizations to aid families within our school community.
Tower Garden Update
Tower Gardens are in use and are flourishing in four of our classrooms this year. Students have had the opportunity to learn about the process of producing sustainable food sources through gardening. Classrooms now have the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of their labor by having a salad party. A number of students will eat types of lettuce and vegetables that are new to them. We were able to establish the tower gardens through various grant opportunities.
Middle School
Norton Middle School’s Farming Club hosted a special dinner for families on May 9th, 2024. Our students worked hard to grow vegetables in our indoor farming towers, donated by Norton Kiwanis and the Norton City Schools Food Services Department. Student’s farming efforts thrived and they proudly showcased their delicious creations. The evening featured wholesome food, including salads, pizza, and dessert. A big shoutout to Dr. Russo and Mrs. Johnson for their exceptional organization and dedication in coordinating this event and guiding our students along the way. It was a delightful and fulfilling evening!

Cinderella
From April 25-27, the Norton High School drama department presented the spring musical, Cinderella. The cast and crew included over 100 students and they did an amazing job in every regard!! The musical has become a staple of the spring, and the singing and musical talent on display gets better every year. Special thanks to Mrs. Tricia Pletcher, Mrs. Jen Casper, and Mrs. Christina Blosco for helping coordinate this special event!
Technology Exploration
Can you imagine creating a digital animation in kindergarten? That’s exactly what Miss Wooley’s students did in Achievement class with Mrs. Wert. Students utilized the 3rd grade Animation tool on ABCya.com to create a picture with a background and stickers. Once the initial picture was complete, they copied the frame, added and/or moved elements, and then made another copy of the frame to add/move more. Once all frames were completed, students clicked a play button to watch their animation in action. Some students chose the “May the 4th be with You” theme, while others chose their own themes, such as the ocean, outdoors, or anything else they could imagine. Students not only practiced their scrolling skills on the Chromebook touchpad, but also clicking to draw. Additionally, they used the undo icon as well as various other tools including the text tool. Who knows? Maybe a few will have movie making in their future!
