BOE Update and Upcoming Events

Friday, January 10, 2025
Dear Avon Lake City Schools Community,
The Board of Education met earlier this week for its Organizational Meeting. Congratulations to Jim Stobe, who was elected President of the Board of Education for the upcoming term, and Michael Sherban, who was elected Vice President for the upcoming term as well.
A Special Meeting of the Board of Education was then conducted, pertaining to several important items in the district at the present time.
A presentation was delivered by a representative from the Center for Marketing and Opinion Research, who shared some of the results from the scientific survey that was conducted in our community over the last several weeks. Attitudes and favorability ratings about the district were included in the survey and presentation, along with data about how citizens receive information about the Avon Lake City Schools. Research was conducted about building options for the district in the near future as well. You can review the results from the survey that was conducted here.
In addition, the Board of Education passed several resolutions as a first step toward considering the best path the Avon Lake City Schools should take in addressing our present operational and building needs. Please see the graphic below with the three options currently being considered by the Board of Education, or you can view this information on the homepage of our website.
Final discussion will be undertaken at the regular January meeting of the Board of Education on Tuesday, January 21st, 2025, and the district will keep you posted on the outcome.
Avon Lake Travel Basketball and Harlem Wizards Community Game
Avon Lake Travel Basketball and the ALCS are thrilled to announce an unforgettable community event—the Harlem Wizards Fundraising and Community Game—coming to Avon Lake High School Gymnasium on Monday, February 17th, at 7:00 PM (doors open at 5:30)! This event, organized by the Avon Lake Travel Basketball Association in partnership with Avon Lake Schools (including St. Joseph School and St. Raphael School), will be a night filled with basketball magic, laughter, and community spirit. This event will continue to anchor our city’s spirit of community and support for our student programs while providing an event to promote our local businesses. Proceeds will support Avon Lake Athletics and Activities Programs as well as a small portion to the Avon Lake Travel Basketball Association. Kindergarten Registration Night on Tuesday, January 28th
Those in our school family with incoming Kindergarten students should note that the Avon Lake City Schools will be hosting an online Kindergarten Information Night from 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 28, 2025. This informational meeting is for parents/guardians who have a child that will be entering Kindergarten in the fall of 2025. During the program, participants will learn helpful information about the registration process, full-day and half-day options, building placements, kindergarten screening, start dates, and other related topics. Interested parents/guardians can attend the online event on Tuesday, January 28th by accessing the following virtual meeting link.
Lastly, you may have heard that school districts nationwide experienced a cybersecurity breach who utilize the PowerSchool platform containing student, staff, and family data. While the Avon Lake City Schools does use PowerSchool, according to our IT Department, our data was in NO WAY affected. We will keep the community informed if any further details emerge. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Have a safe, warm, and enjoyable weekend.
Joelle M. Magyar
Superintendent of Schools
