The Cohasset Compass
Ever Onward ~ Moving Our Schools Into the Future
December 20, 2024
Dear Cohasset Families,
Last Friday night was a true joy. I smiled for an hour as I was transported back to when my own boys were younger and I attended the Deer Hill 5th Grade Circus as a parent. As I sat in the crowd, I remembered both of my boys' and their friends' performances and how they walked around the house for weeks flipping the "devil sticks" and the "diablo". I remembered how much fun they had learning new skills, stepping outside of their comfort zone, and performing on stage for their classmates and their families. It was awesome then and it was awesome last week.
As I watched this year's fifth graders perform, I could not help but see the connections between the circus experience for our fifth graders and the conversations we've been having as a district following our community read of Jonathan Haidt's The Anxious Generation. In his book and each month since I stepped into this role, I have encouraged families and students of all ages to engage in play and responsible risk taking. What I saw on Friday night was an entire grade level of Cohasset students doing just that. Each student learned something new, worked hard and became better at a task that they didn't know how to do on Monday, and engaged in a public performance. And, they did it with smiles, laughter and joy. They supported one another through every success and failure and celebrated each other's accomplishments. While spinning plates may not, at first glance, seem like a risk, when asked to do it in front of peers and an audience of 100+ people, it starts to feel like more of one. These are types of risks we want our students to be taking. They are risks that require them to be new to something, to practice being resilient and persistent, to ask for help, to wade through the unknown and the uncertain, to come out the other side better than they went in, and to know that progress not perfection is the goal. Each of these skills will help our students as they work through a hard math problem, read a book that may be challenging, or navigate an unfamiliar or uncomfortable social situation.
Thank you to Circus Smirkus for spending the week with us and to Principal Sullivan, Mr. Youmans, and the fifth grade teachers for providing such a fun and meaningful experience to our students! You can see some photos of the 2024 circus performance below.
And, as we head off into the holiday break, I want to wish those of you who celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, and/or Kwanzaa a happy holiday and to wish all of you a happy and healthy New Year. Here's to a great 2025 ~ may we all have fun and try something new!
Ever onward,
Sarah
Congratulations to the 2024 National Honor Society Inductees
Last night, the Joseph Osgood chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 25 new members, each of whom is committed to the four NHS tenets of character, scholarship, leadership and service. We want to extend our congratulations to all of our inductees. The work and commitment required to earn this recognition is great and we know that you will continue to pursue academic excellence, be leaders among your peers, and serve your community well.
CHS Civics and Law In Action
Last week, Ms. Jessica Hansen's high school Intro to Law class, at the invitation of School Committee Chair Craig MacLellan, visited the Hingham District Courthouse to participate in a mock trial. Through this experience, the students learned about the criminal trial process by assuming various roles, including prosecutor, defense counsel, witnesses, and jurors in a fictional criminal case. We want to thank Chair MacLellan for sharing his expertise with our students so they could see the practical application of the theory and law they have been learning.
THE CMHS Library Refresh ~ THANK YOU PSO!
Have you heard about the PSO's generous support of the Cohasset Middle and High School Library Refresh? Over the course of three years, the PSO is funding the upgrade of our fiction and nonfiction collections which is resulting in more relevant resources being available for students, an increase in research being done on site, and more readers ~ the number of books that have been checked out since this project began has more than tripled and students are coming to the library more than ever to get reading suggestions and borrow books.
If you are wondering where your PSO donations are going or why you should contribute to the PSO, this is why! Each donation matters and allows us to purchase additional books and resources. If you'd like to contribute to the $50,000 campaign, please reach out to the Cohasset PSO. Our readers and researchers thank you!
South Shore Technical High School New Building Project Informational Session
South Shore Technical High School, built in 1962, is the second oldest technical school in Massachusetts and currently serves over 680 students from Abington, Cohasset, Hanover, Hanson, Hingham, Marshfield, Norwell, Rockland, Scituate and Whitman. The facility is in dire need of updating in order to not only support a 21st century education, offering 14 career technical programs, but also to support greater enrollment (each year the school is forced to turn away over 40% of the students who apply due to lack of space). The school plans to open new Plumbing and Veterinary Science programs in the new building, which would open for the 2028-2029 school year.
On January 6th, Superintendent-Director Thomas Hickey will be presenting at the Cohasset Rotary Club to discuss the reasons for the New Build project, benefits to the communities it serves as well as how it will impact these communities. This is in advance of a critical January 25th community-wide vote in which they hope to gain the support from the 9 South Shore towns the school serves so that they get the approval they require for funding for this impactful project. Cohasset residents will vote at the Deer Hill School from 9:00 AM -5:00 PM on Saturday January 25th.
Please join us on January 6th at 6:30pm at Cohasset Rotary in the Lightkeepers House on Cohasset Harbor (15 Lighthouse Lane) for this informational presentation. For more on this project, please visit https://southshoretechproject.com.
